Uh, sorry to burst your bubble Doug but the Timurids have elephants with cannons... And to complicate matters, Egypt also will have Camels with lazers to balance it out.

Believe it or not, there were camels with small cannons on them in Central Asia during this time period, and elephants too.

However, I'll concede the point. I still contend, however, that the chariots were a game spoiler for me in RTW. It was just ludicrous, and there was no getting away from them, really. I never played Eqypt as a faction in RTW, and chariots were the main reason.

While red headed cannible women were pretty left field. There were druidic guards that fuaght for the gualic tribe of Cenabum. They were noted by many historic acounts. As for chariots the Egyptions didn't use them. But there was little about egypt that was real. CA for some reason created a high period egypt instead of a Ptolemiac greek egypt. But the selucids used scythed chariots still, and the pontics on occasion too. The Casse and briton tribes used chariots also.

Though if you don't think they have some creative units this time, go check out hungary and the muslim factions. There's battle field assasins, Sherwood Archers, Hashin's, and cannon armed war elephants . There's always been something refreshing about near mythical units in historic games. Let us never forget "Bigdaddy" in Age of Empires 1.

I rather enjoy the 'just this side of impossible' units myself. After a long day of slaughter and massacring the hordes of peasants with spears the AI hurls at me, its good to watch cannonophants blasting huge holes in enemy formations.
Sherwood archers are cool to, I always liked Robin Hood ;)

It seems there are Orcs in the game after all.

All these factions did actually use chariots to some degree. For the Seleucids and Pontics they were mainly an attempt to break the phalanx-phalanx stalemate, as a weapon of disruption.
The chariot archers are wrong, though. The Assyrians were the last to ever use them in the middle east, and I don't think the British celts fought like that. It would have been much more accurate to give them javelins.

All kidding aside, there was real danger that CA would go down the fantasy road. For now, the danger seems averted.
I actually think it was because most people have more misconceptions of antiquity then of the middle ages. People expected to see Egyptian chariots, period. In MTW2? People expect to see kilts...

Indeed they were effective at disrupting the phalangites. The british tribes would also use the charge to some degree. They would charge through the enemy's lines and throw javelins at them once on their rear. But yes the chariot archer's they had in RTW were complete fantasy. Chariot archers by then hadent been used in century's. For good reason too, the horse archer was for more effective and more agile.

Still egypt was greek by RTW's start date and wasnt "Egyptian" anymore. Having any chariot in there was unhistoric, and was a fantasticly fansiful fantasy.

The medieval period luckily has easier to understand text's and many books. So fewer left field units.

You forgot a few other units and special moves.

    1. The French trademark "mass surrender" special attack.

    2. The Scottish Highlander mounted-Elephants with catapults strapped to their backs, that sling chariots anointed with the essence of unicorn farts and fairy giggles, that have an area of affect on impact that cause enemy cavalry to charge cohesively. Alternate fire mode causes them to sprout ladders which act like helicopter blades, giving them the ability to perform aerial attacks.

    3. The ultra-super-special-secret mode. Press up up down down left right left right a b gives you tactical nuclear warhead carrying peasants, the only downside is that the explosion doesn't affect routing units.

    Cheers!
