Every event, such as the Discovery of the Americas, the discovery of gunpowder, and the arrival of the Mongols and Timurids occur on a specific date, set in the descr_strat file. It is not scaled to be in line with how many turns you set the campaign to be. So yes, you'd probably be waiting 700 or more turns before journeying to the Americas.
Also, might I add that there are no 'ages' in the campaign at all. It's not like MTW where units from ages you aren't yet in are locked off until 1215 and 1305 even if you have the requirements built. In M2, you just build right down a sequence of builings that lets you get get new units. It's just that the population growth and build times are scaled so that you shouldn't get high units till around 1215 and late until 1305. So setting the timescale down will throw everything off. For example, as the Turks, I have the time scale set to 1.00, and I'm already recruiting late-period units like Janissaries and Qappakulu even though its only 1190.
