Thread: Is Medieval 2 Total War worth buying?

Default Is Medieval 2 Total War worth buying?

I am going to post this here, as i presume most people who have m2tw will be here. my question is, is m2tw worth buying for a rtw lover like myself? the roman era draws me in more, and i dont know whether i should get m2tw when there are mods out there like crusades total war. does any one have any suggestions?

Yes. It is much improved over Rome, even if it does come with it's own fair share of equally loving bugs.

Yeah it is a good game that will get better and better once the initial bugs are sorted.

It is a step up from RTW.

MTW2 may be worth buying when the game stopping bugs are fixed with a patch but right now it is a seriously broken game. I don't recommend anyone buying a game that was released with such poor quality.

    it is worth buying...
as far as veresov's comments, my expeience has been different...
i am playing on a machine barely meeting the minimum reqs on low to medium settings ( i think this is only a factor in tactical mode), and i have only had one crash during a tactical siege battle. error message said it was due to my grafix set too high...

M2TW is worth every cent you pay for it . It got some of its own set of bugs but the graphics and game play are a gigantic improvement next to Rome

MTW2 is so much better than RTW. Even the mods for RTW coudl only really cover up RTW's deficiencies. MTW2 has actual solid gameplay thats satisfying.

I couldn't vote, but I'd vote Yes if I could. There are some bugs, but they are minor in comparison to the awesomeness of this game.

Good: Awesome game. Better than RTW in gameplay in that you have to be, 1) a bit more judicious about when/how to use your units in combat 2)you now have more political issues to deal with (eg the Pope & smarter diplomacy) 3) and that you have to contend with a generally smarter AI...generally speaking...besides those points, the music is great, but I think some of the songs from RTW were more "epic." And of course, the graphics are bar-none, compared to the other TW games.

BAD: Not much. Except for the bugs--oh dear god, the bugs. The only REAL glitch that I'm having issues with is the game's console opening up when I press a key for extended periods of time (it becomes a real pain in the arse when I'm in the middle of a battle and the console pops up and the sound is magically placed on MUTE). Apparently this happens with people who use wireless keyboards...and you can find a temporary fix...but I'm still running into problems with it. People talk about how sieges are rather slow and stuff but I haven't noticed too much of a slowdown yet.

BTW, if anyone can figure out another way to deal with the wireless keyboard issue, PLEASE let me know. THe damn consoles that pop up from time to time really kill the momentum during the heat of the battle.

Yes - it's a good game which can only get better as time goes by.

It's worth buying yes... The graphics and gameplay are much better than RTW, but the AI is still mind bendingly stupid, like blockading it's allies port with 1 ship for 1 turn, then refusing a ceasefire for the rest of the game, laying siege to heavily defended cities with 2 or 3 depleted units of ****, making armies composed of 10 units of catapults and 2 units of peasants, never using trebuches or catapults in siege battles, not combining armies on the campaign map, allowing their units to be massacred by archer fire in siege/normal battles, suicidal diplomacy, and other ****.

Other bugs include your royalty and generals never gaining piety and constantly being executed by inquisitioners, your archers firing at everything except what you tell them to, your cavalry refusing to charge, and units generally refusing to engage the enemy at various points in battle.

Other than this, it's a good game...

Not at the price that's currently being charged for it in around here.

I think I'll wait a few months until the bugs have been fixed, a couple of good mods are out and the price has dropped substantially.

Where are you and what are they charging?

As for the question, I certainly hope its worth buying, since I just ordered it.

yes. it's worth buying of course if u like turnbase and real-time battle game at the same time, on top of which this game stands in the world.

As far from the vote, however you guys easily raised ur thumb saying this current build better than RTW. we have yet to see the upcoming patch at the promised date. otherwise we can't say this is better than RTW at least gameplay, M2TW deals with different age, different historical environment though. it has still MUCH MORE lots of thing to be fixed. what r u hoping the designers to do for the patch? or nothing?

I am a huge fan of the TW series, especially Medieval TW. At first, when i heard about the upcoming release of M2TW, i was very excited. Then after the official release, and after a read the first impression, my excitement got a bit tempered because of the bugs that were present, and because of the fact that the game runs smoothly only on monster computers (wich mine is not) . But, then i thought that this bugs will definitely be fixed by a patch, and anyway the christmas is near so i'll make myself a present by upgrading my comp, or even by a new one. So i think that in the end i will most certainly be buying this game.

Absolutely YES, even if some bugs spoil parts of the gameplay (especially passive AI).

And another thing - I voted and was really surprised over the score (at this moment) - 35 aye, 1 nay. That means that, despite all the criticism that might be understood otherwise, .org members are loyal critics that care about the product. CA should be happy and work harder.

Yes it is worth buying. Just like any other PC game that's released with bugs. That's where the patches come in.

When money will start growing in the trees to be picked and taken by everybody, when solid computer upgrades will be sold at every corner as cheaply as a juice, then i shall consider buying the game, not because it attracts me too much ( no naval battles, for ex), but to make myself a realistic opinion about it.

Also, if i remember well, the last price when i checked in was somewhere around 50 euro... in some countryes, this is quite alot of money...

Damn, I think you'll be missing out. M2TW is the best and most immersive strategy/war game I've ever played on the PC.

    Well let's do the math.

Get MTW at Best buy $50 and a $10 gift card kicked back because they didn't have the "limited edition" (I got the movies on Netflix for no extra cost anyway) that comes out to a net of $40

    Go to the movies with my lovely wife: tickets @ $11 ea. $22, Sodas @ $4 ea. $8 large popcorn $6 , candy $4 = $40

That comes out to hours and hours of fun with a bit of disapointment involving bugs that will be fixed in a few days vs 3 hrs of fun at a movie that may or may not be all that and may or may not lead to fun had by all later that nite. ( talk about frustrutation!!! )

For my money I'll take the game.
MTW it's not a game; it's a part time job.

It's £35 around here at the moment, which is too much for my taste. I'll wait til it's dropped a bit; and, of course, a patch is out. :)

YES, It's the best TW game so far and yes there are some things to iron and to open the game for moddings. After a couple of patches and few mods will become even better.

I was unsure about buying M2TW for a while. I was going to wait for some patches and perhaps some upgrades to my poor besieged PC. But I've bought it anyway. On impulse whilst looking for a birthday present for my mother. Hmm, wonder if she'll want this game? Not installed it yet though. Having too much fun with a heavily modded Jagged Alliance 2, and there's still some mileage to get from RTW. I have to find a spare 11 Gigs of hard disk space too. :( So could be a while til I get around playing it. But the lure of an updated TW game set in Medieval times is hard to resist.

    Is M2TW worth buying?

A qualified yes is my answer. As long as CA works out most of the bugs with a couple of patches then absolutely! Even with the bugs I am having a lot more fun with M2TW than I did with RTW and BI.

Also, if CA, or some bright light in the community, finds a way to let us alter the battle models M2TW has the potential for a long lifespan of gaming and mod playing enjoyment.

I would add one thing though. Try to make sure you have a system that can at least handle the medium settings of M2TW. Mine can handle the higher settings and its just so much more visually amazing than RTW. This game is just so beautiful to watch that I have lost battles because I got wrapped up in the magnificent panorama of it all.

I was never a big fan of graphic goodness before but, now that my system can handle it, with the rest of the pieces in descent shape it just adds so much to the experience.
