    Default Attacking the Papel States

Recently I fell out of grace with the pope (ironically my own) and got ex-communicated. I thought no big deal, I'll just tribute some cash next turn and I'll be ok, but this time the Papel States started taking over my cities. I've never seen them lash out before so I'm not sure what to do. I've inspected Rome and their surrounding cities and am surprised by how weak their military force appears to be. Maybe I should just stomp them out? But what happens then, where does the Pope reside after I take over rome? Is taking over rome the equivilent of commiting mass religious war with all the other christian nations?

Well, as long as you're excommunicated, you run the risk of having one of the catholic factions calling a crusade against you. Assaulting them is a guaranteed method of dropping your Pope-o-meter to the bottom. However, if you're strong, it's quite doable. If the Papal States loses their last region, they'll still exist, but will have to get one of the catholic factions to donate them a region so they can relocate. I got attacked by the Papal States in my current game, but then I'm playing Byzantium.

So will attacking the Papel States out of the region (i.e. taking Rome) automatically put me at war with all the other Christian nations?

Not nessarily I don't think, but its safe to say you'll be fair game for any Catholic nation to attack. And as someone menttioned in the same thread, you might even fight Crusading armies trying to take your cities as well.

But if your strong enough, I'm sure after defeating a nation a few times they'll make peace regardless of your status with the church.

I don't think there are any automatic in attacking the papal states makes you enemy with the catholic factions. It's the same risk as when you're excommunicated and have you're pope'o'meter on zero.

I have the same problem, and the pope won't reconcile me whatever I do.. So yesterday I decided to take him out. And I did. But that didn't help either..
All the other excommunicated factions got reconciled when the pope died, but not me. This was perhaps due to the fact that I voted on the wrong cardinal, combined with that I'm in war with the Papal States.

Now I will kill the next pope, and perpaps I can get my own cardinal to be the pope. Anyone knows what happens then? Do you get to control the armies of the Papal States, or do you just loose your cardinal?

You lose your cardinal, and generally your Pope-o-meter jumps up to near the top, both because the Pope came from your kingdom, and you voted for him.

You will no doubt have to reach a peace agreement with them even if it is your pope. It would be interesting to see where they move to. Perhaps they ask you for Rome back

I toyed with the idea when I had a horrible woman as pope but at the same time I had 8 Cardinals and the pope was over 60 so I just waited.

As I see it then, there is not an advantage to have your Cardinal elected Pope. You loose a good priest, and the pro's are just the same as when you vote for the right candidate from another faction.

In my game now, the pope has died 4-5 turns in a row. But since i have 3 cardinals out of 7 I always vote on the right candidate, and my Pope-o-meter has reached the top! Feels good to at last be not-excommunicated, for the first time in 50 turns or so.. But I missed the crusade...
