Diplomatic Intentions and ceasefires

Is there anyway to determine the intentions of an enemy nation by using diplomats? Any tips or tricks in determining whether an enemy may be ready for a ceasefire?

There certainly is.I always keep a diplomat near the capitols of surrounding factions and check in on them now and again routinely,especially if i think somethings afoot.
In my current campaign i sent a diplomat to the French who were moving armies all around Caen.They were allied at the time but their priority showed war instead of the usual unknown.Within about 5 turns they were besieging Renne.
I have heard that if you have a spy in one of their cities you get more info but i have yet to see this confirmed.
