Thread: Rome taken, so where's the Pope?

Default Rome taken, so where's the Pope?

In my game as England, Sicily was excommunicated awhile ago for something. Then, they decided to declare war on the Pope. After ~20 turns or so they finally managed to take Rome, killing the Pope in the process. After that, a new Pope was elected, which seemed ok, but now he doesn't seem to exist on the map. He's still there giving out missions and so on, but I can't find him anywhere on the map (I toggled fow just to look). So the question is, does anyone know where the Pope might be?

Nowhere, just yet. One of the Catholic factions has to give him a region, or any surviving Papal States military has to take one. When either happens, he'll be back on the map. You can't wipe out the Papacy.

So how do you give a region to the Pope? Does he just ask someone, or can you somehow offer? Also, would there be any benefit to this other than better relations?

in the game where I attacked the pope (heh) the new pope spawned in rome again... right next to me... i could kill him as many times as I wanted... i killed him so many times that I had all the cardinal votes.... :D

ive never seen the pope being given a region. after i killed him he just seemd to pop up randomly on the map - i am presuming ossibly where the cardinal that becaome the pope had been. this allowed me to kill him a couple more times when necessary.

however i have come across a problem where later on i was not able to find the pope at all - nor was i able to find any papal state individual - i wanted to hand baghdad over to the papcy, but was unable.

i would suggest that if oyou intend to kill the and take rome, it woldnt be a bad idea to have already give the papacy one of your worse cities, that way you will always be able to find them.

Having the pope as a character repeatedly spawn in italy after taking rome is a great feature. It gives you an infinite supply of popes for your pope on a rope resource.:)

I had a similar thread up about a week ago. To be honest the whole "killing the pope, taking Rome" thing is pretty sketchy to me. Nobody seems to be able to explain exactly what happens. For example, I ended up killing the Pope with an assassin which returned me to neutral status with the Papal States, which is all I cared about so problem solved. However, I thought "Hey I wouldn't mind expanding a little, what happens if I take rome and kick them out all together?" From what I can tell your relations with the Papel States would be ass for the rest of the game, and considering you may not be able to find the pope to give money or land to, how would you ever be able to make it up? You may have Christian factions picking you as a religious target for the rest of the game, or atleast until a new pope is elected.

Someone really needs to do some research on the matter, because its still a mystery to me.

I agree that this is kind of cheesy, maybe even bugged.
I've had som discussions in earlier threads on what to do to get reconciled and obtain good relations with the Papal states. The solution was quite simple: Just wipe them out!
As the manual says, the relations and "excommunication-reasons" seems to be personal business between your faction leader and the Pope. You kill him, and it's all forgotten by the rest of the Papal States..

This happened in my game: I attacked Rome and killed the Pope. In the following election, I voted on the wrong Pope and (apparantly because of this) continued to be excommunicated by the next one. He popped up right next to Rome, together with the remaining Papal States army. They attacked Rome in the first turn, but I won the battle and killed this Pope too.
The next election I had learned from my faults, and voted on the right candidate. Because of this support, I got reconciled and my relations to the Papal states became excellent! (8 or 9 on the Pope'O'Meter). This Pope popped up out of my sight, but after a couple of turns he arrives with a boat on Ajeccio (which I control). And for 10 turns or so now, the remaining Papal State Army (2 stacks or something) is just standing still doing nothing, while the Pope himself is standing on Ajeccio doing nothing.
This seems to be bugged or something, but works ok for me..
