Thread: Siege slowup...

    Default Siege slowup...

Didn't understand what everyone was talking about at first, but today I got a little introduction. Turks vs Byz, I'm turks, and the byz have a siege tower, siege ram, and three sets of ladders. One of the sets of ladders only has one ladder in it, and that happened to be the one that all of the ten infantry units swarmed to (forgetting all the other siege equipment). Needless to say, I stuck infantry units along possible attack routes and then cooked up fettucini alfredo with grilled chicken and garlic bread. By about the time I was done eating my homemade dinner, the battle was finally over with.

Any word on the streets as to whether or not this issue will be addressed in upcoming patches and when? I think I have a bit of a solution (if you could call it that) right now, and that is to have a unit of preferably cavalry sally forth from the walls and attack the blob (Doesn't matter what kind of unit, but it has to be a melee attack. Cavalry just get there before christmas). It seems to snap them out of it.
If I wanted to be [jerked] around and have my intelligence insulted, I'd go back to church.

The cavalry will only delay them for a bit. If you don't manage to rout each and every one of those 5+ units they just turn and promptly slaughter the cavalry. Kinda sucks because even that doesn't seem to help the lag much.

CA announced they had identified the problem and would have a fix for it in "zero day" patch. This was 2-3 days after some of the players in europe got the game. So one almost has to wonder how long they knew about this bug while rushing it out the door.

I'm sure that if CA had as much time as they wanted to refine and tune up their games, we'd never see them on the shelves. I've read quite a few developer diaries over the years, and the one general agreement is that publishers are always chomping on the bit to get the game out the door, and put some strict timeline restrictions on game companies.

On another note, I'm sure that CA did most of their game testing on real high end machines. In all likelihood, this problem was never much of an issue for them. Of course, no game testing in a little shack in Brisbane can compare to a few million players with a plethora of different computers staying up all night for weeks on end.

I got my first introduction to it last night. Playing the Spanish, I got backstabbed by the Portuguese, and they attacked with a full stack on a city that had a general, 3 town militia, and 2 spear militia. I resolved to sell myself dearly. When they assaulted, they had a ram, 1 siege tower and one ladder. My towers ignited both the siege tower and the ram, so they all crammed around the base of the ladder. At first, nothing changed, and I thought my computer was beast enough to handle the problem everyone else was reporting. But as the battle went on, it got progressively slower and slower. I eventually had to quit the battle. Since I had it won at that point, I felt no qualms about reloading a save and using a cheat to win the battle in auto-resolve.
