Compound onto CPU

Quick question.

I've build a few machines in my lifetime. I've always spread the Compound onto the CPU and then put the heatsink on top. My friend has build a few machine in his lifetime. He has always put a drop of Compound onto the CPU and then put the heatsink on top.

What is the best way of putting the Compound onto the CPU?

The method really depends on the type of thermal compound you're using. If applying the old generic white stuff, then smear a thin layer all over the CPU core (or heat shield, if applicable). But for specialty compounds, like Arctic Silver or OCZ Ultra, the "grain of rice" method is preferred. Just apply a small dab to the center of the core, mount the heat sink, and go. Some compounds will take some time to "cure" before maximum effectiveness, so don't start overclocking right away - wait 24 or more hours.

I've always used the "generic white stuff". However, in my new build i've decided to spend some cash (+ $3 on a $1,500 build) and go with the Arctic Silver. I'll check their website for more info.
