The impact of the real Black Death in Europe cannot be underestimated - most of us will never see anything a tenth as bad, even as global warming bites. I suggest that if you're interested in seeing just how awful the plague was, and what the long term effects were, you could do a lot worse than read Norman Cantor's superb book, In the Wake of the Plague: The Black Death and the World It Made.
