Anybody checked the amount of ammunition for missile units? I sure don't seem to run out of javelins, for instance, as quickly as I used to. I'd like to know if it's ammo, rate of fire or my imagination.
I think it's ammo. Horse archers in RTW carried 30 shots, IIRC. In fact, since I am now posting from home, I'll go check. Be right back...
...eastern horse archers carried 40, chariot archers carried 60, militia cavalry for the Greeks carried 6 javelins as did the Roman cavalry auxiliae. It looks to me (observation only) that horse archer ammo is about the same as it was, but for certain Jinetes carry more than 6 javelins each.

You'll have to wait till the patch to answer that question. The relavent file is packed away.Originally Posted by Doug-Thompson
But more then likely it's a combination of having low ammo and high rate of fire.

I don't have any. But I was doing a test of Desert Cavalry vs Billmen and had enough javelins to bring the billmen down to 15 men with the last volley (so quite a lot). They seem to do very significant damage as well.

Ammo is found under stat_pri in export_descr_unit.txt.
Foot Archers/Crossbowmen: 30
Mounted Archers/Crossbowmen: 25
Gunpowder units: 20
Javelin units: 8
I always thought that Boyar Sons in particular seemed to have less ammo than other Javelin calvary.

Actually a few horse archers have 30 arrows as well, but there seems to be no structure to it.

Could you list em? I just checked thru the unit file again, and I couldn't find any :(

Heh... it seems I missed what kind of units I looked at. After all the horse archers are all in one big collection. Anyway, it was actually the two crossbow armed units, Mounted Crossbows and Strzelcy.

This one I really don't agree with. One of the big advantages of firearms vs. bows is that you could carry a lot more ammunition. Less heavy + far less bulky = can carry more no? I might have to look into modding that.Originally Posted by SMZ
As for the Javelins, I'd have to check but I think you got 4 with most Javlin units in MTW. I haven't played with or against them yet in MTW2, so I have yet to see if they're as lethal as they were in MTW.
well I'm not that knowledgeable on firearms, but didn't the soldiers have to carry their own powder, loading tools, etc... in addition to the shot?
My impression also was that the shot fired from these types of handguns was essentially large metal balls... nothing like modern bullets, so I would think they would be heavy and cumbersome...
iunno, seemed reasonable to me... maybe somebody who knows more can comment?

Well ammunition consists of two different things for muskets and such. You have the metal projectile, and the shot (or powder). I'm guessing that the low amount of ammunition is a reflection on the powder, and possibly it's low supply or ability to be kept usable.

20 shot is ok for arquebusiers etc. Later soldiers did carry quite the same amount of ammo in the field (officially).
But I wan't to see the footsoldier who goes comfortably with 8 javelins.![]()

I actually reduced my arrow ammo. I gave all archers 12 ammo. I reduced all horse archers by 10 ammo from their previous level. And I reduced all handgunners, musketeers, arqs to 10 ammo.
Now I can't just sit still and absolutely massacred a unit to the last man with bows or guns anymore. I weaken them and then I must attack.
