    Question $#@&$% swear words

Since there is a current concern about swear words on this board, I thought it best if I asked just what is considered a "nasty" and what is not. Three in particular:
1: Is using symbols to express anger (sa. $#@&$%) considered using "swear words"? I am not a mod, but I think this should be ok, as long as it is not directed at a person on this board.

2: The word Taff (ai. What the Taff! I don't give a Taff! You taffer! etc.). It may at first glance look like a swear word, but in fact, the worst that can be said about it is that it is a curse word. It comes from the game Thief, and means simply 'to steal' (a thief is a "taffer"). The gaurds would use it when they became frustrated, and many Thief players I know (including myself) use it quite often. It is not more than a simple, harmless, not derogitory curse you use when you are frustrated. I hope it will not be considered a swear word, and as I do not know, I have refrained from using it till now.

3: Can editted swears be used in humor if they do not contain sexual themes? (by editted, I mean %**$#, F#$k, etc.) When I say in humor, I mean not directed toward a board member, or at least if it is understood a joke is being made.

I would really like to know the answers to these questions.
    Thank you very much,
Vuk (alias Stealth Thief, THE THIEF, Thief Player)

I'm pretty sure taffer is allowed, though calling someone a taffer may still be classed as flaming someone (in the same was as calling someone a thief would be). At the end of the day it depends on the context I supose. As to the rest of it. I'm not sure why people need to swear that badly that they feel the need to use symbols to try and get the swearword through...

Some people (such as myself) just feel a need to emphasise what they are saying, or to show their frustration.
As for taffer, it is calling the person a thief, but is not meant to say that they steal, but that you are frustrated with them. You know what I mean? I definitely see your point, but that is not the way in which Taffer is used. For instance, when I frequented the Circle, we used to call each others taffers all the time, even when we were not frustrated. People who play Thief use it usely, and not as a curse word, etc. And since only people who play Thief (and understand the complicated uses of the word) would ever use it, I wouldn't see the problem in it. But I'm not a MOD, so I guess I'll have to wait and see what they say.

I don't find taffer particularly offensive, though if I had never played a Thief game (which luckily I've played the first one and a bit of the second), and english was not my first language, I may miscontrue what is being posted and understand it as an insult. The problem with using **** etc , etc when frustrated is that it shows a general lack of any converstation skills. I'm sure that if I can post a reasonable paragraph, without resorting to this type of inflammatory posting, then anyone can. There are many more articulate ways to show frustration and other emotions.

As a side note I'm sure you're allowed to use @#%$^! etc, because I've seen this mentioned somewhere. And there is a smiley available that displays this text:

There is no need to swear or insult anybody in an internet forum, or anywhere else in the world for that matter, anyway. So just don't do it even if you censor such words. I repeat:
    DON'T DO IT!

Unfortunately, the rules here are a bit different than at the CoSaS (yes, I frequent the Circle too), and a good majority of mods (with the exception of frogbeastegg and myself) have not played the Thief series and would see taffer as something harmful rather than playful and lighthearted.

Yeah I'm pretty sure he was talking about words that weren't directed at anyone.

Whatever the wording, mods generally warn for posts in which a user is personally offensive about an issue or another user. Doesn't need swearing for that to be the case. I'm neither for or against the use of swearing, though I do believe it unnecessary as a means to clarify my feelings.

Whatever the case nobody should post any rude word that you would not expect a three year old to know.

Some people cannot speak at the age of three.

By the way, should words like 'perplexed' and 'Shakespeare' not be used because 3 year olds don't know it?

Interesting personal rule you have there.
