Supply and demand on custom battles

I just noticed last night that the price goes up on high-dollar units if you order a bunch for a custom battle. Is this new to MTW2? This must be a balance maker for online battles, I presume.

Even in MTW custom battles, the 5th unit of the same type is more expensive, and the price for each additional of the same type are even more expensive. As you say, it looks like its an attempt to force you to build more balanced armies.
