Default BIG MP Communtiy? Small MP Communtiy?Medium Ones? what ones do you like?

    Hey,

if a mod/admin can make a poll for this, it be good :) :)

When you go to play MP, ethier everyday/other day or a few hours a week, what type of MP communtiy do you look for, after you pick out a genre of games you like to play online? do you like the Medmium 20,000-100,000 player ones or so, like in a FPS like BF2/2142 or COD3 or COunter Stirke or Half life2? do you like the Small ones with only a few hunders or few thousands or even only 5-10 players, like Majesty, TW, or MOH (MOH had 500-1000 last time I checked, I could be wrong since I used GS at that time) or do you like the big ones like WOW or EQ2 or GW?

You can make a poll yourself normally. It's one of the options at the bottom of the screen when you start a new thread.

As for, I don't do MP, it tends to be too much competition and not enough 'fun' for me. In strategy games people tend to exploit weaknesses in the system leading to tank rushes, all cav armies and whatnot, severely limiting your gameplay options, in FPS games you have lag, bots and people who just play them way too much, no fun in getting killed constantly.

MMORPGS I just don't understand, an RPG without a story ? What's the point then ?

I like there to be a lot of people, but not ridiculous amounts. Preferably a few thousand at the most.

Although some games i make exceptions, such as NationStates. There are 1.6 million people playing, but once you join a region, you'll end up being nucleated into that region and it's alliances. I'm a resident of India, and currently we're allies with about 6 other regions, of which we're the biggest, with 70 people. We're fighting against raider organisations who attack small regions. All in all there's probably about 1000 people involved, and it seems like epic power struggles, but when you look at the rest of the game, it's pretty small on the big scale of things.

So is there a method for actual war built into NationStates now?

As to the question; enough so that you can always play with some good people is enough for me. Though playing in a community so small you know practically everyone and play on the same server is nice.

It's not really proper war as such. It's just alot of seeing who can get the most UN nations into a region. Basically, the side with the most numbers can win, but we're hoping to spread them out thin.

That the whole point of having a MP doc, besides having fun, competition is suppose to be in MP.

I hate the 6 Million player type games, because, oh sure, you may have groups of people around. but it's not like BF2 for example, where you can join the same extact server and know everyone in it. in WOW, you meet some ppl in a "noob" town, and won't meet them again. To me, To actually break into MP, you need to make friends.

Medal of Honor: AA suits me. I play on the same few servers, and know most of the people on them by name, and I have a fair few who know me as well. It's probably more fun. You can have a chat with familiar names, and discuss strategy, while not getting too deep.

I enjoyed both the relatively small TW multiplayer community, as well as the much larger WarCraft III one.

Small ones are akin to "dead multiplayer communities" so they are not good for that reason.

Big ones are not good because big ones means the dev is actively nerfing the game to crap from week to week based on the ludicrous ramblings of the vocal majority of bad players.

So neither is a good option in my view. I'd like to see big ones start sprouting out with devs who take an anti-nerfing philosophy to heart, but I doubt that will become reality.

I think small ones are just fine m8.When you have a Communtiy like TW, everyone knows each other and such, so it easier to get things done. BF2/2142 are a medium size game, but it again, not like WOW, so just play on the right 5-10 servers alot, and you be well known by copule hundred players then. GW and WOW, I won't even bother with. I not going to pay some dumb 15 dollar a mont fee (expect for GW) when there is no guartenne I am going to have time to play it alot.I already tried EQ2, and I hated it. GW I like, but get boring after a bit unless you get a good guild to join. WOW looks ok, but again, not paying 15 bucks a month..

On Battle.net, Blizzard listens to top players for advice as to what to nerf and what to buff in the next patch. Works swell, though, of course, there's always a new exploit around the corner.

depends on the game really; for Tactical Games I like a small but hardcore community (ironically I don't play RTW Online), For FPS I like a medium sized community, because it offers the chance to play a game with quite a few players, some good, some bad, but overall most of the n00bs have left. For MMORPGS I like a very large community, mostly because it makes the world seem a little bigger, and... kind of, maybe, sort of realistic...

As long as the community is large enough to support the game (= there are enough players to get games going relatively fast and there's enough competition), the size doesn't really matter. Larger games often have "sub-communities" that specialise in a certain gameplay type or play at a certain level.

Let's take Guild Wars for example, since I'm most familiar with that one. Just by looking at the numbers (somewhere between 2 and 3 million copies sold) it appears to be a big game, though it's clearly segmented into different gametypes and levels of play. Like WoW, most players aren't interested in the competitive side of the game and play PvE only, maybe dabbling a bit in the lower forms of PvP.

Guild vs Guild combat, the "highest" form of PvP in GW, has maybe around 10-20k active or semi-active players. (EDIT: I might be wrong about this, the number can be larger. But I'm only familiar with the top 100 or so, which is less than 2% of guilds currently on the ladder.) All of these share the same ladder, but there's significant division because of different playtimes (timezones) and skill levels of the guilds involved. Guilds of a certain skill level tend to meet other guilds of similar skill level in their timezone, so eventually people will recognise familiar opponents. Observer mode for the top 100 guilds helps this too.

The "lesser" forms of PvP like Team Arenas (4vs4), Alliance Battles (3 teams of 4 per side), Heroes' Ascent (6vs6) etc. have their own communities. Sometimes these communities overlap, but each gametype tends to have its well-known players.

So the point of this rambling is, once you get past a certain size it really doesn't matter all that much. People tend to naturally break things into manageable parts. They can be servers or gametypes or whatever. Smaller games like TW may have only one "server" (the lobby), but the community is so small that it doesn't really need to be broken into smaller bits.

I like big MP communities, fast moving and hyper active. Such as America's Army and EVE Online. Places which are highly active.

Also the size is less important than activity and immersion of the community. That is the critical point.
