Thread: Why can't they build a tiny bridge/boat.

  1. #1

Default Why can't they build a tiny bridge/boat.

They can build a tower. They can build a flaming fort. However, for some misterious reason, they can't build a tiny bridge or boat to cross even the smallest river.

A general plants a huge army in a bridge for 20 years and your only option to cross the river is to fight him in the bridge losing half your men to stupidity.

Roderick (the freakishly chivalrous): "My men! Build a bridge to cross this river!"
Useless Bannercarrier: "Sorry sir we can't do that. It's too difficult"
Roderick (the very great): "What?! You just built a fort, for me's sake!"
Useless Bannercarrier: "Sorry sir, we simply don't know how."
Roderick (the strongly hated): "It's not even a big river! It's a flaming piss! Do you want me to cross it swimming and show you?
Useless Bannercarrier: "humm, sorry sir. We can't swim."
Roderick (the mildly angry): "Build a frigging watchtower and throw it over the frigging river!"
Useless Bannercarrier: "Really sorry sir but if we attack the watchtowers we would probably burn it."
Roderick (the quite hysteric): "That's really great mr. bannercarrier. Ok, I'll cross the river alone, I'll buy meself a mercenary army and I'll attack general Hugearmy from the other side while you attack from this one."
Useless Bannercarrier: "Fantastic plan mylord. However I can't assure you we wont rebel while your majesty is at it. You see, with all this 'cross the river' thing, the troops are quite nervous and want to go home."

Actually, I have no problem with it. Most of the rivers on the campaign map are the largest rivers in Europe. Building a temporary bridge across them would be an enormous undertaking. Certainly moreso than a puny wooden watchtower or pallisade.

Just build roads in your provinces and I believe the bridges will automatically come...

Nothing a nice troop of artillery cannot handle. Simply have your artillery rain hell from above on the enemy position. Breaking the line, then send your men onto the bridge when all is safe to do so...

    Lol

you;re actually upset about a the AI doing a smart job and defend a chokepoint like a bridge?

    I think it's a good thing.

Building a bridge across the Danube or the Rhein in no small matter. Maybe
some units should be allowed to swim across, but I would think that even for
light infantry about 20-30% making it would be a miracle.

Naaa, this game doesn't upset me. I just find it a bit forced. The designers want to have bridge battles, ok, but no army would enter one unless absolutely necessary.

It would be very easy to add a temporary crossing to the current posibilities.

    A) You can attack the bridge if you really want to cross it this year or...

    B) Stop next to a river and lose your turn building some means of crossing. If the opponent sees you, he can attack you there anyway, but if he simply left an army standing in a bridge for longer than their combined lifespans, you simply pass the river the next turn.

Well get your head around this then... Before the roads were built (and thus the bridge) that section of the river was shallow enough to wade across.

Obviously some mysterious contruction technique require that the drege the river for the bridge construction!

In game I have no problem with this. The bridge (or ford) area simply represents a easily crossable section of the large river. This may not be particularly realistic in concept but, but produces realistic results with armies fight for control of crossing points.

    Alright very funny...

    We do have a Roderick it seems. It would appear that Zanshin had a general called Roderick. Even if he didn't;

I am asking simply because it is my christian name.
