There is a percentage chance to retain the Father's traits, whereas Man of the Hour does vary on the battle you fought.
There are some "hidden" traits, but for the most part traits are gained either at birth or through character actions.
Some examples of "hidden" traits:
1. LoyaltyStarter +5 Loyalty. This is why all generals have base 5 loyalty.
2. ReligionStarter +3 Piety. This is why all generals that come of age have base 3 piety. The code is slightly broken so adopted generals and men of the hour don't get it (and thus have very low piety).
3. Sane. An excellent, but very, very rare genetic trait that prevents your characters gaining certain... excessive tendencies.
4. IAmPope. He is the Pope.
5. Objective/Subjective. Governs the acquisition of superstitious and rational traits, I think.
6. Divorced. Character doesn't continue to gain stuff like cuckold since he isn't married no more.
Divorced? How does that happen?
At times I really want one.

Unused. Some "new traits" (as in those added specifically for M2TW) don't seem to have valid triggers. Some have elaborate triggers for passing them on genetically but no trigger to introduce them into your bloodline to begin with... it's a little messy in that sense. The princess ones are the worst affected and about half of them are unused.
