    Default Gooooo Organ Gun, Goooooooooo!

Last night fighting a defensive battle against Portugal as the French I probably had the coolest thing happen I've seen in this game. The mercenary Ribalt (Organ Gun) completely turned the tide of battle.

I had set my defenses near a copse of trees with some armoured sergents hiding in the trees. My peasant archers and militia spearmen were arrayed next to the trees with my archers behind the spears. At the end of this line I set the organ gun with my calvary a little further out to attempt a flanking manuever when the Portugese approached my lines.

After exchanging some volleys with the archers the enemy line advanced. I think some dismounted knights slaughtered my sergents in the trees, but even though they had a poor showing they held up the heavy infantry long enough. Right as I though all was lost (some of my main line was begining to rout) I decided friendly fire be damned and let my organ gun fire at will.

Immediately the two guns opened a volley on the enemy that were charging my lines on the far flank. The front line is completely slaughtered and the units morale is crushed. Down the line each volley was breaking units, especially the ones getting caught point blank.

This is definetly my new favorite warmachine.

And THAT'S how you use an Organ Gun properly. Nice work Bong.

I had some "WOOP WOOP" situations with Monster Ribaults myself. A marvelous sight, seeing 36 barrels being unloaded at some poor spearmen unit, it always puts a smile on my face.

I haven't had that kind of effect from ribaults, but I have seen it from musketeers. I had a rolling advance going against the French in one battle, with 4 units of musketeers alternately moving and firing. French units close to the volley were routing left and right. A unit of dismounted feudal knights tried to charge one of the musketeers, took a point blank volley that dropped probably 15 knights, and immediately routed. Close range cannon fire does it too.

I can't say i've had that sort of good fortune in a pitched battle, but in sieges monster ribaults are worth their weight in gold. simply set them up behind the city gate, wait for the enemy battering ram to do its work, then watch the enemy swarm into the opening only to meet... 72 barrels of death. 300 kills in one volley, thats what i call a result!!

    GAH!!!!!!!

But That is just about the best use I could think up as well. I remember the old Organ Gun in MTW, it was also great in sieges, of course it helped that it could shoot through the gates, so it could knock off those pesky idiots trying to break it down.

I remember how upset people got about the "unrealistic" organ gun when it was added to MTW. Interesting that there's no commotion this go-round. AFAIK it was used, it just wasn't all that common.

The rebault is a good weapon, but I think it should be more expensive and have a lower rate of fire. Those small barrels took forever to swab out and reload with separate powder and shot.

I don't think the rate of fire is correct on any gunpowder weapons in this game, it would be awfully boring if it were. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the early bombards take something on the order of an hour to reload? Bring a unit to a battle, fire one shot, have them withdraw because time would expire before they can shoot again. How much fun would that be?

Yes, the glory of organ guns on the flanks. The range was buggered but that’s what they’re for.

I did this as an experiment before. I had a full stack french army catch me by surprise and attacked a castle with 1 normal ribault, 3 levy spearment and 1 billmen , 1 militia archer and general.

Before I could send a relief force, they assaulted. I put the ribault down the road facing the gate and my spearmen on either side of gate blocjing both sides. then split my billmen and other spearmen behind them.

I was so surprised when after the ram battered my gate that the enemy jammed the entrance and my reg ribault was laying into them. I figured anytime they were gonna charge my weapon but it was mostly infantry and they were being routed right and left.

from around 900-1000 enemy versus my 300 troops I was so surprised I didnt lose castle. I dont remeber their losses but they routed enmass and by the next turn I had support.

I was so surprised I won that battle and that my troops held their ground allowing for a killing field.
