Thread: Several unrelated observations

    Default Several unrelated observations

I'm posting all of this in a single thread because I can't (yet?) post more than one thread every few minutes.

    1) Got my first CTD under 0.8. Was playing as Parthia and after a couple of years decided it might be amusing to see what my largest town looked like. Went to the load screen, then got what looked like an error message about the program not being able to find some kind of greek unit (didn't catch the name exactly, but thought I saw the greek word for bow as part of the name), followed immediately by a CTD.

Fought my first battle. Unfortunately since I've never fought one as the Parthians before I can't tell what is part of the mod and what is native to the program. I did notice a couple of weird things:

    2) This mod definitely has some kind of Greek bias. I told a bunch of Dahae to ride to the other side of the battlefield to spook my ethnically confused opponent into charging (their troops were dressed like easterners, but the general was done up like a greek -- is that because they were Eleutheroi ? If Free Guys got translated into Farsi would he have been wearing pants?) and I distinctly heard someone call out "Andres hos tachista!". I think "O andres, hos tachista!" would probably be a bit more idiomatic, but on reflection I realized that I shouldn't be able to understand a word of what was being said because I am innocent of Iranian languages. Is Greek being used as a linguistic placeholder for Persian, or is there no Farsi voice-mod?

    3) I had three Parthian generals in the battle described above, each with a different type of bodyguard. The youngest, who had just come of age was accompanied by late Parthian heavy cataphracts. The other two (the faction leader and one of his generals) had Persian heavy cavalry from either Pontus or Cappadocia, and something else -- both archer types with heavy charging capability. I don't have a problem with the hodge-podge of units since I suspect that over time generals will start showing up with cataphracts, but is this intentional, a relic from the vanilla unmodded version, or an artifact of the mod process?

    4) People keep getting duplicate characteristics. Not sure if this is intentional or not. A worshipper of Mithras who is governor when an altar of Mithras is built in his city becomes a worshipper of Mithras and a worshipper of Mithras. Sort of reminds me of a French play where one of the characters comments that she loves names that repeat themselves (e.g. von und zu). Is this a mistake or a way of showing the accumulation and depth of effect (like getting two different armorers)?

    5) Completely unrelated to this, I noticed someone being described ( I thought) as a Hellen in his traits or characteristics. I think this should be Hellene (Hellen is the racial progenitor, Hellene is a member of the race). I'm assuming this was a typo.

    5. Hellen is the Greek word, Hellene is the english word.

    3. Starting generals' bodyguards had not been changed - I don't know what stage this is at, but eventually all start ones will have the same as ones who come of age or marry in.

    4. those worshipper traits will be gone back over possibly by 0.82, but definitely by 0.9. They just need cleaning up.

    1. Make sure to tell us wha the error message is when you get it - if you type it out exactly, then that means we can be almost certain it won't happen again in future builds. If we don't see the error message, we can't really tell what the problem was.

    2. You didn't say what type of unit the rebels were, so we really can't be sure. It was probably a unit that has a greek name, or is a baktrian unit.

    All done.

Just to clarify about my Greek-speaking nomads.

I've heard Greek spoken several times by a Parthian army that was a mixture of Parthian and Daha units. But I think the culprits may be the Daha, because lately I've disbanded my Parthians because they were too expensive.
Last night I heard someone yelling something that sounded like "Archers get in formation" except that it got yelled in Greek. The only Parthians that I had in that battle were the General's bodyguard, so it must have been a Daha who yelled it. I also hear "move quickly, guys!" in Greek a lot.

These are not rebels that are speaking Greek. These are the Daha archers and javelin-chuckers that are part of the Parthian initial setup. I haven't paid close enough attention to see if I can get the Parthian cavalry to do Greek commands as well.

Are there really Farsi voice-bits in this thing? During the set-up phase of a battle using the initial Parthian and Daha army one of the things that I noticed is that most of the units grunt back in English -- once the battle starts they seem to be speaking Greek. I'd pay closer attention to this if I knew what the linguistic capabilities of these units actually were.

    1) The CTD I mentioned is very easy to reproduce. Fire up the Parthian scenario and click on a city and try to view it. The error message that you get reads:

    Generic Error

    Failed to find texture

    'eb/data/models_unit/textures/UNIT_GREEK_PELTAST_MACEDON.TGA'

Only the latin, gallic and greek voicemods have been completed so far. We decided to use placeholders for other factions instead of having them speak english.

I've posted that CTD message on the internal forum Phil. Thanks! Anytime anyone sees one of those, definitely report it and we can fix it.
