Default Well, I quit playing M2TW for now.

In that I play this game for the battles, I just can't deal with cav and other pathing issues anymore. I will wait for another patch and try again but for now it just isn't fun. Just about every battle is a siege anymore and troops can't function for cr@p in cities so I am moving on. If they ever figure out how to make cav charge or have more than 10% of my men fight at one time I might come back, but for now I am done.

I have been playing since the MTW2 came out in November, and I must say I completely disagree. Most battles are not sieges, in fact you can usually avoid city fighting if you just wait it out. If you want to guarantee a field battle, appear to have a weak stack in your enemies territory; or attack your opponents wherever the mood strikes.

But if you want to have successful city battles, DO NOT USE CAVALRY! Use your heavy troopers to wade into your opponents, put your archers on the walls, and use spear/pike troops against the enemy cavalry. Also, put 2 or more spies into any settlement that you wish to be your own and look at what the percentage is for the gates to automatically open when you approach. If this number is not 100% or better, put another spy into the city. I rarely use artillery to get into cities, because I have to pay for the repairs after I take the city.

It sounds like you've already made your decision, but just out of curiosity... what size do you have your army set to? I'm using normal size, to reduce pathfinding issues inside settlements. Large and Huge seem to have more problems.

The next patch is supposed to improve cavalry charges. I don't have much trouble with it myself, although I do get the occasional "walk slowly into battle" instead of the expected cav charge. That's VERY frustrating, but it doesn't happen to me that often. Mostly I see what I expect to see. But we all have different tolerance levels for that sort of thing.

It's all based on the cavalry in your city battles, not some inherent flaw in the game.

I just had a battle as spain, where france besieged Angers. Since spain really lacks the early spear units and I had most of my dis. feudal knights in Rennes for guard duty, I had to fight an assault off with javelins and peasant archers vs a mixed force of crossbowmen, town militia, and dis. feudal knights.

So France brings the first of their two units of dis. feudal knights up with a ladder, while hitting one of my walls with their catapult unit. My javelins started throwing their little, well, javelins, and I managed to kill a couple before they started their climb. Well all the meanwhile, another unit of dis. feudal knights start pushing a siege tower to the other side of my gates, and my peasant archer general's unit barely manage to set the thing on fire before it gets to the wall. So that unit has to make the long haul back to their line while under archer fire, and the rest of the enemy starts mobilizing after the last catapult round crashes against the walls.

meanwhile, my javelins are fighting a losing melee against the feudal knights, and eventually start routing. No biggie, they come back to their senses early enough for me to start throwing javelins from the base of the wall up at the knights on the wall. I kill off all but thirteen and they route, just as the enemy ram slams into my gate.

Well the town militias start pouring in, and the crossbowmen are following as well. I have a couple of javelin units placed along the path to the next wall (it was a fortress) and three more units of peasant archers defending the walls by the core of my castle. Well a few of the militias start climing the ladders and eventually kill off my general, who I would like to believe fought to the last man.

While that's happening, my javelins are playing a game of skirmish with town militia, and I have my peasant archers raining down the fire arrows. I eventually manage to route all of the town militias, and I send out my only unit of dis. feudal knights to engage the five units of crossbowmen. Thankfully, with a little fire and a little javelin harassing, the crossbowmen route, and all I had to do was march out to the catapult crew.

I fought one of the most engaging battles I had ever faced in any game, and only won because I played off of the strengths of my army and used sound tactics. The enemy army, which outnumbered me about 4 to 1, was crushed by a bunch of javelins... My only regret is that they weren't Almughavars.

Well I put thew game aside too. But not because I hate it (actually I love it with Civ IV and SH3 in the top 3 games ever) but because I have to learn for my stupid enviromental law exam. Why do i need that? :-)

Well, I understand the limitations and do indeed bring plenty of archers and infantry or spears (as appropriate) to city battles. I can get charges out of my cav, if I am very careful, when on the battlefield. And I can run down routers most of the time. I play on normal sizes, have a top of the line computer and have been playing TW games since Shogun. I just am constantly frustrated with the bugs in the game. But then Rome drove me nuts too and I didn't play it for long so I am not shocked that M2TW is not my cup of tea. Despite the fact that the battles in STW and MTW were what drew me to the game I almost enjoy M2TW more if I autocalc because I don't have to deal with all the crap not working. It also makes the game a little more challenging because I can't command my way thru battles when I am outnumbered. But then that is part of the problem, the fact that it is easy to win battles when you are outnumbered 4 to 1. I was just hoping for more challenge and less frustration and neither is here. If you are enjoying the game then great, but probably your hopes and expectations were lower than mine and I am glad you are satisfied. I am not.

Why is it that the response to reasonable statements like that is always something like "lolz no u suck this game rok u a idoit"? I expect that kind of stuff from the apes at .com, but sheezus...

I don't see that at all. What I see are satyrical replies to an "I'm taking my ball and leaving" post, which is what it was. The same replies you'ld get to such a post on any internet fansite gaming forum. Had the OP posted why he didn't like the game, asked for opinions, and left it at that you'ld have most likely seen much different responses and possibly a much more mature discussion of their opinions/position.

Thread did not start very promising and after a few valiant initial attempts at rescuing it, went further downhill.
