I often during the sieges send a cavalry unit to root the artillery/catapults if the enemy puts then too ahead of the main forces.
BUT - sometimes the gate remains open! Sometimes it closes and sometimes not.
Any ideas why this?

I think its a bug. Sometimes when I send cavalry out to encourage the enemy to move into range of my archers but the gates close behind me and I can't get back in, and, as a result, the unit is slaughtered.

Well, it is supposed to open and close when a friendly unit passes. Lets hope the dev knows about this.
Evening Handel,
Of the top of my head, maybe you have another unit close to the gates?
Last siege I defended, my gates remained open through my own stupidity, rather than any bug...
Found one of my mortar crews going for a wander outside the city, panicked and double clicked them to make them run back inside...
And run they do... Leaving their hardware so that the gate cant shut...
The bad guys were through the gate in seconds
One of those quit and reload moments...

I found that if you have a unit standing near the gate, the gate won't close. Try moving it away from the gate (even a few m) and the gate will close.
It's odd like that.
- I'm sorry, but giving everyone an equal part when they're not clearly equal is what again, class?
- Communism!
- That's right. And I didn't tap all those Morse code messages to the Allies 'til my shoes filled with blood to just roll out the welcome mat for the Reds.
I move just one cavalry unti outside. So if the gates opened, they surely must have enough place to close. But yes, I agree - maybe the game "thought" some of the inside units was too close to the gate... which makes this a bug again.
