    To clarify a little, Caravel is referring to a "trader" as a needing to build a trading post (which can then be upgraded to a Merchant, Merchant's Guild, etc.) in the province(s) from which you wish to trade.

    Also, trading posts can *only* be built in provinces with trade goods. (Yes, I realize that's a "duh" statement, but people have asked before. )

    You are most likely going to need more than one boat. Keep in mind that you will make money based on how many ports belonging to other factions you are connected to. If you are playing as the English, your quickest route to some cash will be to extend an unbroken line of ships through Skagerrak to the Baltic. On the other hand, you will also need to place some ships around your island so that you don't have to keep huge garrisons in every province. Enemy armies can't invade by sea if you have a boat protecting your coast.
