I really don't understand how this could be successful. Firefly is a cult series. It has nowhere near the high profile of Star Trek, Star Wars, or even the other newer series like Babylon 5, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, etc. with the general gaming audience. What success it has with its audience and fanbase is due to the character development. The writing was unusually good for this type of thing.
Take away those specific characters, replace them with generic roles (pilot, doctor, fighter, priest, engineer, courtesan, ninja), and that game setting just isn't very interesting (IMO). The whole thing took place in one poorly-defined solar system with one cute idea about using a wild west + space theme, but no real depth outside the story arc. There just isn't much there to work with, after you remove the main characters.
Maybe I'm wrong and it will be great, but I'm skeptical. They're going to have to really flesh out that background setting to make it interesting enough.
