My parents are from the region, but their not Afrikaans. Their of pure English/British stock.

en Engels is my eerste taal translates into : And English is my first Language, though I deeply love Afrikaans, the words are so descriptive for instance:

Driehoekkerriekoekie - Three cornered curry biscuit - samoosa
Wortels - roots - carrots (W is pronounced as a V)
Spring Mielies - jumping Corn - Popcorn.

The best thing about Afrikaans is the way you can manipulate it, if you do not know the word you can make it up using existing words:
Suur (Sour) lemoen (orange) - lemon (it is just one of those things about that language thatt make it great
Drie (Three) Hoek (Corner) Kerrie (Curry) Koekie (Biscuit) - Samoosa
Drie (Three) Hoek (Corner) - Driehoek - trianlgle.
That is why it is such a cool language, a triangle has three corners therefore it is called a Driehoek.

Also if you want to make a description of anything to exaggerate for emphasis all you need to do is add a 'vrek' or 'dood' before the Afrikaans word, the teacher can never mark you wrong as it another thing in the language, though you never use the word 'vrek' when talking to someone, it just loses the whole meaning and can be offensive, though in context it is not a bad word it is just not considerd to be "right", it can also make the word hilarious.
Vrek is for non-human things. Dood is for human things

doodmoeg - dead tired
vrekwarm - dead hot
vrekinterresant - dead interesting
doodslim - dead clever

LOL cool. So what do you guys reckon the best place to live in SA is ? What would be the best spot to visit ? I'll surely be back, absolutely love the country. I also like the way people are , much more human than in the industrialised world. I know it's very different from the rest of Africa but SA has aroused my interest in Africa. Africa suddenly took a priority on my travel list after I visited SA. I did'nt see all that much but I did mostly Guateng-Pretoria and around there. Ohh talking about Samosa, I did'nt mention, my ex was South African Indian.

Best place to live or safest place to live?

A must to visit is the Kruger National Park. Truly stunning. I was lucky and saw lion every day, and a leopard that crossed the road right infront of us.

Also, you should visit Zaire or Botswana, also good game parks there.

The best place, it is tough becasue many of us have town pride and would die defending the honour of the city (figuratively), I am a Capetonian, it is the best, the scenery is awesome, I would hate to have to bomb this city in the event of a war, the wine routes give it a cultured essence, and our sport teams are the best even if they choke in the big games (gasp super14 glory fading slowly to the Australians and New Zealand teams, the horror, the horror, the horror). The Stormers have the best team on paper, but as we know paper doesn't count that much unless it is a peace declaration).
Though a must for the holidays is Plettenbergbay, the beach is warm enough (warmer than those in Cape Town) and it is in that magical place between a rural dump and an urban nightmare. And Matric rage rocks over there (December holidays 1dec - 15Jan is just a blur of good times)
Though Durban is alright even if the Sharks can't weather the Storm (rugby joke)
Rugby is like American football, ony you can only tackle the ball carrier and not obstruct the other team from tackling him (or her). There are no mahusive paddings for protection or helmets. The ball may never be passed forward only with a kick, a scrum is like a scrimmage only in a scrum the opposing teams lock together to form a table like structure and attempt to push the other team backwards while trying to work the ball to player at the back so he can pass it to the other team members, the try area is behind the posts and the ball must be placed down with pressure (your pinky will do) and if the TV ref cannot tell if the ball has been grounded (too many playersin the ruck/dogpile a scrum is called and the teams must go at it again) There are no offensive/deffensive line just 15 players who must attack and defend. But all in all the principles are the same: Get as many points as possible and get that ball accross the line.

I have LOADS of friends from South Africa. I love em all they are great people - something common with most of them. Never been there but it must be great.

Spart I love Rugby as well we play it here in England too (we invented it).

I concur- I've worked with about 40-50 South Africans and met some of the finest people among them. Not to mention the tallest (!)

Also found them very friendly when I was working security at a conference there a little while ago.

As for Rugby- Union or League kids?

I would like to take this moment to thank William Webb Ellis for picking that soccer ball up and running with it, it must have taken guts to pick up a soccer ball during a match and run with it.
Rugby union is amazing, not too long ago the IRB 7s tournament was played in George (Rural town in Western Cape). And in most matches the one team always ran away with the game, but in the end it was a SA New Zealand final and guesss who had to choke, take a wild guess, Yes South Africa chokes in the last four minutes of the match and lets the other team score 3/4 tries. . The the New Zealanders are my favourite team because of their style of play (hard and fast), and Also because I lived a while back.
So anyway any South Africans still out there

Sorry but my dutch would probably sound like double dutch, no? Otherwise if you can understand dutch and perhaps we can also understand you. Do take a visit in the Talk Your own Language thread when you can post in the frontroom. It's ruled by dutch speakers. And I'd like to learn a lil south African, it's quite a cool language, imo.
