    Default What do units say?

That is the question. What do unit troops say in battle maps when you click on them. I can only understand "Accelerate" when ordering roman troops to run. But, what else? Is there a list of command drills?
    Thanks.

General's voice; something patrician would be nice. Should annunciate clearly. Other soldiers can sound more casual; slurring together sounds a bit may be appropriate.

    Some terminology to give you an idea of some of the things being said;
Lachen (lok-en); Army/Soldiers, literally means 'Children' though
Epos (ep-os or ep-us); Cavalry/Horsemen, literally just 'Horse'
Neitom (nee-tam); A form of 'Neitos'; just 'Soldiers', but specifically infantry
Ambu/Ambos (am-boo/am-bos); Related to 'ambush', refers to ranged attackers of various types, and skirmishers (who would be ambushers)
Ameno (am-ee-no; as in 'amino acid'); 'Attack'
Basbh (bazb); 'Kill' or 'Slaughter'; used in many respects, was also a war cry
Keltoi (kelt-oy); Celts, specifically Gauls often (but not always), still in common use in Gaul at the time of EB as a name for the entirety of the race (including Belgae and southern Britons, who were not counted as Gauls); meant to display a sense of unity
    Galla (gal-ah); Gauls
    Oban (U-ban); Rally/Reform
    Kamros (Kim-ros); Friends/Comrades;

? = denotes strong uncertainty about the previous word, look for better substitute if possible

Some commands will be completely ignored since some commands have been removed from the RealMod, such as the Screeching Women.
The language must be as realistic as possible - this is not prose nor poetry, so find words to express the inherent brutality of war (without exaggerating).

Forms of addressing troops: Often ”mīlitēs” was used, if general is older he sometimes said ”iuvenēs”. Sometimes they just said ”Rōmānī” and the very emotive (and Caesar-favored) ”commilitonēs” (co-soldiers, which is maybe why he appealed so much to lower classes, he wasn’t placing himself above them when he’d talk to them!). Sometimes ”fortissimī virī” (most brave men) and even ”manipularēs meī”. ”veterēs” is also an option. ”Quiritēs” was very patriotic, but not as common.

Awesome, I've been wanting to see something like that ever since the new voicemods came out.
    Cheers Shigawire.

Basbh (bazb); 'Kill' or 'Slaughter'; used in many respects, was also a war cry
I wondered about this one in particular. The way it's said is often reminiscent of "go go go" in modern language, so I was curious as to what it meant. I knew bás meant "death" in Irish though, so I wondered if it was something similar in Gallic.

I have a question on the Latin unit pronunciations for anyone with a book like Vox Latina (most likely TA):

When a noun is declined with two Is, why are they not pronounced separately? For example: triarius --> triarii.

Am I missing something? I've been through my Wheelock books and Gildersleeve book and have found nothing mentioning them becoming a single, long I. Same thing goes with units like the Extraordinarii.

    Should it not be ex-tra-or-di-na-ri-i?

Are you calling for the absence of audio between the two I's?

Because if you are, I must say that it doesn't make sense on the battlefield. Try to SHOUT extraordinari-i in two different ways: once with a long i and another with 2 seperate i's, you'll quickly learn what becomes easiest to shout in a battlefield situation. Language has a tendency to quickly adjust to what people find convenient. But I think TA should explain this in detail.

In any case, the physics of audio comes into play here. When you shout on the battlefield, your soldiers will barely be able to hear such a short burst of silence between 2 vowels. And if they do hear it, their brains will fill in a letter or two to make it fit. I think the human brain's response would be to fill in an "H" between the I's to make sense of the word. "extraordinarihi"

Oh, I understand completely what you are saying, Shigawire. In fact, I am inclined to agree, but the goal is to emulate a native speaker so I was wondering if there was any definitive work published discussing the issue. It may be difficult for us but a native speaker would probably have no trouble - I have been able to do it, but only with much practice.

Overall, I am disappointed with the Latin voice mod. At times it sounds as though the speaker is saying "Romane" instead of "Romani" or use weird accents (Equites Hispañorum, and Equites Germanorum sounds almost as though it was pronounced with a French accent). Unless I am missing something I can't help but think it is wrong.

I am willing to do my own recordings for the team, but want to finish my Raphia project first, which should be easier once my new computer is built by the end of this week. Then again, I might not even be qualified to do such recordings.

If the disagreement is with a couple of unit_select sounds, they are very easy to mod for yourself. 3 soundfiles for the "Equites Germanorum", and 3 soundfiles for "Equites Hispanorum." Thats 6 soundfiles, of a total 411 soundfiles. And if you want to redo all the ones with -ii endings, that's also possible. None of this has ever come up inside EB though, so I suspect you probably won't find many who agree with your position inside EB. We'll see what people outside EB think though.

Have you really read explicitly that that's the case in latin? That would mean that the last syllable would be emphasized and that is against standad desricption if classic latin pronunciation.

I don't have a vox latina lying around here, but -ii doesn't become a single long syllable in anything I've read (certainly none of the professors I've ever had have omitted one of the two i's). They aren't dipthongs. The latter i has a macron over it when they are rendered with macrons also.

"The gen. sg. of second declension nouns ending in -ius or -ium was spelled with a single -i (filius, gen. fili; consilium, gen. consili) through the Ciceronian Period. However since the genitive form -ii (filii, consilii) became established during the Augustan Period and since -ii was always the rule in adjectives (eximius, gen. eximii), this is the form which will be employed in this text."

    - Wheelock's Latin, 6th edition, pp. 24-25 (footnote).

That was the only reference to this issue in Wheelock that I know of. Not dealing directly with pronunciation, but interesting nonetheless.

How so and why would that differ from any other declined form?

Triarii would have the emphasis over the 'a' just as it would if it were triarius, triario, and so forth.

I should have read this about ten minutes earlier because I'm at the library and they have two or three copies of the book, but I have to leave for class (Roman Art and Architecture isn't going to learn itself). Maybe later today I'll check it out before I leave campus.

Yeah, Cicero likes doing that, but since the mod takes place before Cicero...

Well as it takes place before cicero, then the single -i for the gen. sg. in nouns must have been the one in use, which would suggest current pronunciation to be correct. But then, this doesn't say anything about the nom. pl., which is what we are talking about, so the quote didn't actually help at all.

I have a similar question about the pronunciation of "Strategou" by some units. They pronounce it "STRA-te-GO-U" with the final omicron and upsilon pronounced seperately. Was the diphthong "ou" not pronounced like the "oo" in boot? My "Greek: An Intensive Course" handbook says so, and the "ou" sound was transliterated into Latin as "u" (hence "mousa" becomes "muse"). Is there a reason that it is pronounced this way?

It does sound like it was drawn out a little more than it should have been. It should be a dipthong.

Not necessarily. Wheelock says through the Ciceronian era, but I wouldn't say that is indicative of the era before - unless that is the meaning of "through" - as in, from earlier Latin through to the Ciceronian era up until Augustan changes.

Cicero is also fond of syncophe in verbs so I could see an extension of such a fondness to use the option of just -i rather than -ii. Unfortunately, Vox Latina doesn't seem to have anything on this particular subject, but there are other books I can take a look at next time I'm on campus. But also, as you said, nom. pl isn't the same as gen sin.

Abou, the "wrong" pronounciation of auxilia units, like equites hispanorum was made, I think, on purpose - those guys are not native speakers so they are not expected to speak latin super well.

Yeah, I thought about that, but I figured that auxiliary units would be under the command of a native Roman officer, who would be shouting the responses

I am not sure if I understand what you say correctly, but in certain places two "i" in Latin do tend to contract in a single long one e.g. the genitive "Vergili" instead of "Vergilii" or "di" (nom. pl. "gods) instead of "dii". It isn't obligatory, but it is fairly common.

Default Re: What do units say?

That gods one is somewhat of an exception, and the plural should theoretically be dei; the dii and di are forms that are used, but it's irregular for those reasons. It's not common to just contract any double i endings. You were right to say "in certain places", but not to say "its fairly common". Anyway, at *absolute* worst, you could say our endings in this matter are an option, you certainly can't say they are wrong. Vocatives and genitives are different matters (vocatives with an i at the end of the stem do contract to a single i, but these aren't singular vocatives we are talking about).

I meant it is fairly common to have forms like "Vergili" or "consili" (genitives) instead of "Vergilii" or "consilii"; the contracted versions are more common actually in those cases than the uncontracted ones.

But I didn't say you are wrong to take the option you took with the uncontracted forms, I just found the statement
but -ii doesn't become a single long syllable in anything I've read (certainly none of the professors I've ever had have omitted one of the two i's).
somewhat bizzare, and only offered my opinion.

Well, because if you want to distinguish the last i from the second last i you must put some stress on he last one: [tri'a:ri'i:].

I've never seen that form in any latin grammar book. Of course I'm here talking about classic latin. But in classic latin the nominative plural ending for masculines in second declination is one long vowel [i:] without any stress whatsoever, like servi ['servi:]. Words ending on -ius will keep the i in their stem and will therefore be spelled wirh two i-letters, but pronunced with one long vowel: triarii [tri'a:ri:]. According to the books I believe this is the case.

Changing the theme a bit, but tought this little question didnt deserve a new topic.

I heard that Pontos will have units name in Persian, but orders in Greek. I have tought if there is another case like that.

Well I have read in a historical novel that Carthage gave their orders in Greek too because of their huge amount of nationalities in their armies. What have you read? Is true.

    Thanks =)

Well, you'll just have to tell me how I did. Hopefully I didn't confuse long vowels for accents.

    Triarius declined
    Triarii
    Equites Extraordinarii

Maybe I should have compressed them, but if someone would want to use it in their install, might as well leave it as is.
