You should consider releasing a patch or mod to help create a better diplomacy or negotiations system. It's so broken, it makes the game neigh unbearable.
Current Campaigns:
I suggest Shaba Wangy's Diplomacy mod. The campaign AI is tweaked to behave more like a person would behave avoiding mindless self destructive war policies, taking on every faction around its borders. It really gives a player a chance to let the AI build up to make it more challenging for the latter period of the game. There's more to be said about the mod... check it out. download the mod and just be sure to run the mod/game via bat file or you will still have the kind of AI that will force you to destroy them and win the game in 80 turns.

Its a very good diplomacy mod, also included is an optional agent balance mod. Merchants make more money, assassins are better (start with more xp), Byz gets bonus to diplomat and there are less Inquisitors!
