I have no idea which units qualify for the free upkeep whats the deal, some units I make are free then I make the same unit again and they are not free anymore. The city has to have the building to build that particular unit type for it to have free upkeep in that city. Also, there is a limit on the total number of units that can be upkeep free in a city. I think, it's 5 on maximum city size. Anything above 5 would be charged "at the regular rate". City automatically picks units that get the free-upkeep bonus: the bonus goes to the units with the highest upkeep (from the ones that can be built in the city).

    1) Only units with "Militia" in their name qualify for free upkeep.

    2) You get different "free upkeep slots" for different types of walls. Basic pallisade is 2, Wooden wall is 3 etc... (it's written in each wall type building card). All units over this cap have to be paid for.

    3) You only get free upkeep for those Militia units that can be trained locally. Building only one town up to churn out halberd militia for you whole empire will not work - they will be free in that town, but paid in towns with lower level barracks/walls.
Anything wrong ? Blame it on me. I'm the French.

free upkeep only comes from cities, not castles (with the exception of the wooden castle and a tourney field). thusly, free upkeep units are only militia units. for a list, look through your export_descr_unit file with "find" upkeep.

the levels are 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. after 6, you must pay for upkeep. these values can be edited in both the unit and buildings file to add units or increase the number which may be kept as "free" units.

In, my scotland game I got the militia as a free upkeep but the pikement sometimes were free upkeep sometimes they weren't, so thats why I was being confused. I guess I will research that file and see. (And no all my free upkeep slots were not taken.)

Is the free upkeep feature of the tourney field bugged? I have never seen a unit (knights or other types) in a castle with tourney field with a blue background.

As far as I know the free upkeep only applies to cities, and not castles.
So no it's not bugged, just designed that way :)

Also, don't forget that once you move those free upkeep units out of the city, they are charged normally (at least that's the case for me).

If you move higher tech units into a lower tech city they will not get the free upkeep, however certain units in cities are not free.

For instance Pikemen might be rather professional, and the HRE Forlorn Hope are definately not free upkeep (dammit). But generally if there is something that says Militia it can get free upkeep.

I have wondered about the Tourney Field. I'm pretty certain that the inclusion of the free upkeep thingy is a mistake. However, knowing that militia are free upkeep, perhaps they are free upkeep where there is a Tourney Field... But I doubt it since they can't be produced there.

    Would be cool though.
Nice way to get garrisons for castles.
