    Default Notebook optical drive help?

i just installed a wireless card on my notebook and my optical drive stopped working.
The correct drive name and model is picked up in the device manager, but it has an error (Code 37)

I tried updating drives -> drive not found.
I tried uninstalling the wireless card -> nothing.
I tried a different optical drive -> doesn't work either. (is picked up by device manager)
I tried switching the boot order to cd first, and reboot with a windows xp cd in the drive -> windows start up with out giving me an option to boot from cd.
I tried rebooting with a Ultimate Boot CD in the drive --> the ultimate boot starts but the test hangs on the secondary drive test for 30 min (i restart)

    What do i do?
The only possibility i could think is getting an external cd drive and formatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows.

    What could be the problem?

    Thanks in advance.

In the old days device conflicts were a common thing. It doesn't happen so often now.

For here I would post the make of the notebook, I assume that as you call it such it is a Lenovo/IBM as most other brands refer to them as laptops.

Post the make of the wireless card and the optical drive.

I would contact the maker of the wireless card as that is the last change and hence the source of the conflict. They might have ready work arounds.

Question IRQ conlict or maybe not?

    Hello.

Your problem is conflict between optical drive and wireless card in so called IRQ channels. And that messed Windows. There is high probability that wireless card and optical drive use the same IRQ channel. Do you have manual for you notebook BIOS?

    1. You can set IRQ manual in Windows but I don’t know how.

    2. Enter in BIOS and go in section PnP/PCI Configuration (or similar name). Something is messed there. Try to manual solve conflict with IRQ. But you need to know what IRQ channels use both devices which can be found partly in section Integrated Peripherals (or similar name). In PnP/PCI Configuration you will see probably Auto set up on all PCI x IRQ Assignment (x is number – my motherboard have 5 PCI slots). In section Integrated Peripherals you need to find your optical drive. Find all IRQ and numbers and then compare with that in PnP/PCI Configuration. Locate your wireless card and change its IRQ number. That will probably solve your problem.

    3. If nothing helps, uninstall your wireless card and try to use optical drive.
    - If optical drive works try to install another wireless card.
    - If optical drive doesn’t work you will need to go in service with notebook as Windows is totally screwed up.

Ask if something is not clear enough.
