Thread: Landmass ratio question

    Default Landmass ratio question

Could anyone tell me if this map has too much sea relative to land? I'm getting a CTD when the map tries to load.

Depends what size the map_heights is. Despite way its normally refered to its not actually a ratio problem but relates more to absolute size and shape of sea's - but unfortunately not something I've ever pinned down to a quantifiable size / shape!

Guessing visually if that heights is over 700+ high you could have a problem especially with the wide sea area to the west of italy.

To test if it is that or not simply make back up copy of your map_heights then alter in game one by putting large RGB1,1,1 islands in the middle of the widest sea areas - or if you don't have ports on map_regions / descr_strat you can simply try launching with an all land (1,1,1 plus) map heights. You don't need to alter map_regions or anything else to test.

BTW you can also get similar crash if you have too much impassable land in ground_types, and possibly for very large region sizes (though I think that one does get past generating map.rwm and CTD's at end of load bar - not sure though)

I got the crash with an almost totally filled in sea area. There were a few pixels left that were isolated, and I couldn't be bothered to fill thise in. The ground type is all either shallow sea or high fertility so far - hadn't got round to changing that yet. The map heights file I posted is 329x449.

Are you it's a CTD related with the landmass ratio?
When exactly do you get get a CTD - when you click the arrow? at same stage of the loading bar progress? Check here:
    https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=58801

If it's when you click the arrow then there could be a landmass problem - make sure all land pixels have same Red value as Green and Blue - ie RGB 1,1,1 not 1,1,50. (only BI issue)
At that stage CTD can be also caused by map_features.tga failure - make it all black, and map_regions.tga bug - a color not assigned to a province in descr_regions.txt.

You can also upload the map so others can check what's wrong, if you don't won't it to be public you can send also a link in a pm

I get the CTD as soon as I click the arrow after selecting faction. This is on vanilla RTW, but all land pixels in map heights are greyscale anyway. Map features is all black (RGB 0, 0, 0), and all colours are accounted for in map regions I think.

A jpg version of map heights is in the 1st post of this thread. Otherwise, which files do you want to have a look at? I'm only following a tutorial making this, so I don't see any reason to keep it totally private.

Here's the file in the campaign folder. I based it on the sicily map I found on this site, which is why the map previews and city names are a little weird!

You sound like you've ruled out land mass, and that's small for it to be problem anyway. If you don't mind posting, zip and upload all the campaign folder and the 'campaign_name_regions_and_settlements.txt'
    on any freebie site:
    http://www.megaupload.com/
or similar, give us the link to files and say what patch /rtw /bi version you're running it under.

Only other silly one I can think of at the moment is not changing size reference correctly in descr_terrain.txt, should be same size as map_regions.tga.

Also please confirm does it crash literally as soon as you click button - or do you get corrected_regions and map.rwm generated before it goes?
EDIT: ignore my post atm you've already sent files - I overlapped your post...

Hah! A solution! I rechecked the size in descr_terrain, and sure enough there were two things wrong with it. 1 - a typo. 2 - It was of an earlier version of the file.

    Thanks ever so much.
