    Default Carthaginian Formation

There was a thread about this before that I don't see any longer on the first page but the replies were mostly in response to Roman legions. I tried looking through some material earlier and found a generic formation but not specific units that match with EB units, so I was just wondering what do you guys use for the norm formation for Carthaginians?

I put my phalanx troops in one long line *normally a mix of those kick ass 2 libyphoenicians, or elite africans later on*. In front I have my missile troops, normaly slingers *celtic or balaeric* or cretan archers. Behind the phalanxs I put my supporting infantry, libyans, iberians, *iberian assault infantry, elite africans, and loricati scutarii later*, and other depending on area *greeks, samnites, celts*. Behind that I put my cavalry, normally sacred band and a mix of curisii and lancearii.
I shouldn't have to live in a world where all the good points are horrible ones.

Is he hurt? Everybody asks that. Nobody ever says, 'What a mess! I hope the doctor is not emotionally harmed by having to deal with it.'

I enjoy a fluid organization as Carthaginians and not overusing Phalanxes, they aren't really worth it if you ask me. I much prefer the flexibility of the Carthaginian auxilies and medium infantry combined with their superior cavalry to win the day. Plenty of other factions toteing phalanxes, try something else! I use them sparringly as a backbone to formations rather than as my main battle line.

I'm looking more along the lines of historically accurate, not loading up on Elite African Infranty and Sacred Warband Cavalry to fill a stack :p

Historically accurate? Would simply be a core group of medium infantry and cavalry from Africa augmented by local levies and auxiliaries from across the Carthaginian mercentile empire. Then again the structure of Hannibal's Army was far different from the 1st Punic War armies to my knowledge and I know really not alot about 1st Punic War Carthaginian Army composition.

The Carthaginians relied heavily on mercenaries, which later got them in trouble at the end of the 1st Punic War when the Carthaginian senate refused to pay them. Anyway, not much seems to have been written on formations used by Carthage - save Hannibal Barca who frequently changed formation for each situation.

Generally, they do seem to have used Hellenistic tactics and even hired a Greek mercenary general (Xanthippos) for a time in the 1st war. If anything is regular it is elephants in the front and cavalry on the wings.
