Default Support question from newbie (is that allowed?)

Hello, I am new to this forum, although not to the TW series. I have played many happy games of the original MTW, and now I've got M2. The problem is that I cannot get the tutorial to work. The preliminary movie plays, but the game hangs on the screen where the Battle of Hastings is supposed to load. I am pretty sure this is *not* a hardware issue, as my PC is brand spanking new and not cheap! Also, I tried loading a quick battle, and that *does* work, so it isn't that the game won't run at all. Does anybody have any ideas?

BTW, I hope it's OK to ask this question here. I didn't see a board dedicated to support on the site.

It's fine to post it here, the Citadel or Apothecary are also suitable.

That's an odd error, maybe LEN, Geezer57 or somebody with tech knowledge could be of help.

    NO!

    YOU CANNOT ASK QUESTIONS HERE!

    YOU WILL BE DESTROYED!

    Just kidding

Are you sure it's actually hanging? It might just be taking a long time to load; how long have you waited? How much RAM do you have?

I believe I've got 1 gig of RAM. And I'm pretty sure it's hanging b/c the hourglass cursor vanishes, which does *not* happen when I load a quick/custom battle. Thanks!

I understand this to be a problem reported by numerous people in 1.0.
I rememeber seeing something similar to this reported in the list of bugs fixed by the 1.1 patch also.

Download yourself the 1.1 patch (I recommend doing this before you play the game at all anyway, 1.1 is so far superior to 1.0 I wouldn't want you to get the wrong idea about the game based on an opinion formed of 1.0) and then let us know if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't fix it, which I doubt, try removing all traces of the game from your computer and reinstalling it completely. It may have been a corrupted install if you had things running in the background.

You can also check your ram by going to start, run, typing dxdiag, and selecting yes if it asks you some kind of tech question. Your ram is under the title "Memory" on the first page's list of things and shown in megabytes. 1024 megs is 1 gig.

It's not lack of the patch - I installed that before trying the game the first time. I'm embarrassed not to have realized before, but it turns out to be a performance issue after all. I tried loading the tutorial again and walking away for a good 30 minutes. It had loaded when I came back. So much for my bravado about my new machine! I will continue reading the posts in the Apothecary and trying to optimize the game settings. Thanks, everyone.

Ah, I thought it might be that - the historical battles have a tendency to take longer to load because of the various scripts and so forth that need to be loaded as well.

I'd base your performance settings on custom field and siege battles instead of historical battles for this reason. Just fiddle around a bit until you find a happy medium

It is so interesting, that all of the installers say, to close everything, 'cause it could cause a corrupt installation. I always run a lot of programs, and it never happened...And I do buy a lot of games, download lot's of programs, and i didn't see something like that.

The only time I ever see anything like this is when ripping music from a cd to the computer. If I try to do that while opening or closing another program while the cd ripper is running, I get about a half second glitch in the track where I started or ended the other program.

99% of the time I'll agree with you, but I've seen the problem first-hand with On-Access Virus Scanners and install programs. It didn't cause a corrupt installation, but one install of MS Office at work took ~3 hours because the on-access scanner was looking at every single file.
