Thread: Info request on background script

  1. #1

Default Info request on background script

I've not been able to fully understand the "background script" that has to be activated during load by clicking a settlement. What exactly does it do? And what happens if I, say, fight a major battle, forget to activate the script, end the turn and save the game? Will that save be "corrupted"? And if so, can I live without the script?
Right now I'm not sure if I should continue my campaign from the possibly "corrupted" save or from the "clean" one many turns and battles back.

I'm sorry if this subject has been answered before but I did actually use the search function ;)

Whether you leave the script on or off only affects gameplay, not game compatibility. The script gives the AI extra money to prevend it from going bankrupt, it monitors specific events such as the 271 BC or the 261 BC messages (messages telling you something about some events in real history), and spawns armies in some cases (like playing as Baktria, activating the script will spawn some armies for you to enable you to start your conquest).

So if a game is saved when the script is not properly activated, can I still reload that save and activate the script or do I have to reload an older, non compromised save, in order to experience the benefits it brings?

You can, probably. Some complications might arise with trait-script interactions, but if the script was off just for one turn you might get away clean.

Not to mention all of the reforms, government scripts for the player and the AI, allied cities scripts, the 4ty system, and some events that might be accompanied by army spawning.

AFAIK, you can leave it off for ages, turn it on and... continue as if nothing happened. You'd surely miss tons of gameplay (because that's what comes with this kind of scripting), but you wouldn't lose your game over it.

Just regard it this way: there's a lot of EB which makes it different from anything else, such as graphics, sounds, descriptions and other stuff - but what really makes the difference is it's script. Without the script everything else is reduced to mere 'candy', nice, and indeed good in it's sort, but, without the 'framework' that the script provides the mod loses it's backbone, nerves and muscles. You'd simply have Vanilla restyled.

(You'll have noticed that I strongly recommend you turn the script on. )

We also handle the Romani/Celt reforms by script, as well as the 4-turns-per-year thing.

If you left it off, your game shouldn't be harmed. Your generals may have aged faster, as they get a year older every winter. The AI may be a little broker, or not have govs in settlements they conquer. That's about it.

    Will do :)

I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't miss out on all the goodies if I were to use my latest save. I didn't know exactly what the script did besides a popup I received when I conquered Rhodos that warned me not to go mainland unless I was crying for war. But I have been noticing stuff that I now know is all thanks to the script. For instance the AI actually piling up on gold, enemy armies surprising me, AI using ships to land armies (pretty sure I've never seen that before), Saba conquering territories far from their main province, etc...

Oh and yeah of course, the 4tpy system. I've scratched my head a bit about that one as I thought it was not possible to mod it to work with age due to hard-code, but you've managed to go past it nicely with this script.

Thanks for bringing clarity on the subject.

In my oppinion, the most important thing that the script does is place government buildings. If the AI takes a settlement when the script is off, there will be no government building placed and that will result in screwy (or none) recruitment for them for that town.
