Please post your system specs, especially graphics card chipset and driver versions. Your symptoms sound suspiciously like a video card driver version/setting conflict.

If you have nVidia card, go to control panel, display, advanced, then set your Anti Ailising to 2x, you need to tick the force box. That should work.

But if you can play online (MP) only, and your getting CTD (crash to desktop) or (returning to windows) when trying to play (SP) single player.
you must be using Totalwar ERAS, as such i suggested you follow the advice above.
