How to get mad traits

Anybody know a good way to get your general some mad and sick traits? I recall in RTW how sometimes they got this "bloody" trait, and others up to a point it'd scare the troops.

My generals always have a mix between good amounts of chivalry and dread (and many stars of course). Sometimes some cruel traits but never any mad ones.

I want a CRAZY general in my family tree for once!

off topic: this is a bad idea. when you at 0 chivalry/dread, you get no bonus. you only get any bonuses if your really chivalrous (morale bonus for your troops) or really dreadful (morale malus foryour ennemy). at 0, it does literally nothing. try to concentrate on one or the other.

I'm pretty sure it's random, and it usually gets worse once the seed is planted (which is usually at birth).

I'm proud to say my current Russian faction leader is insane. His madness brings morale penalties, but this are overcome by his other morale bringing traits so I don't mind. And for some reason the -4 authority his madness brings seems to have wrapped around his authority scale since he went from 0 to maxed out when he got the trait.

He really does kick amazing arse as a warrior king.

That's what I wanna have. Surely there gotta be a way. Maybe you remember the kinds of actions your faction leader did?

Maybe sending one of your lesser generals and his bodyguards into a full enemy army, and doing this a couple of times with generals, would help make the faction leader insane?

Or having tax rates insanely high, to a point settlements rebel and you exterminate them over and over again?

Maybe using assassins to kill literally everybody on the map. Even allies, pointing to paranoia, pointing to insanity?


Just speculating, 'cause I gotta know.

Nah - I think the madness is genetic in this game, not triggered by whatever the guy is doing AFAIK. Try inbreeding, it might be linked to that. I'm betting they have far better chances to go insane if you marry the royal family into itself. Historically, it's not from the inbreeding itself, but primarily from the syphilis that would so often become rampant in royal families due to their sexual relations. Unchecked, syphilis can eventually cause neurological complications, most notably insanity. As there were no good ways to treat or diagnose syphilis until the 20th century, those infected would often fall prey to the insanity so common in the later stages of the disease.

Hmmm, sounds reasonable, foz. How do you exactly go about that business? I occasionally had a mission to marry my princess to a family member, so do I just do that.... gotta point my princess to a family member? Are there more ways?

If you want to "create" a crazy general/leader you can use the "give_trait" command for the following:

Highlight the general/leader outside of a city/castle, bring up the console(~) and type:

give_trait this Deranged 3 Gives title "The Mad"
give_trait this Inbred 6 Gives title "Idiot"
give_trait this Insane 3 Gives title "The Mad"
give_trait this Perverted 6 Gives title "The Foul"

I take no responsibility what this "created" general/leader might do to your campaign or to the stability of your game. All this info was from a text file from within the game. Have fun!

Theres two ways to accomplish your task...

1. Get it right after birth. Its not genetic so if father is insane it won't help you getting insane trait for your generals.

2. Get nice spy and stack it with your general. After that go hunt enemy assasins. After few attemps he will get paranoid trait and after that he will get mad, if he will be target for assasination. (Spy is to protect your general from assassinations. You will be able to do it without spy too, but your generals life will be nearer the edge.)

And when you get it your general will get more and more insane every turn. Final level of insanity is "utterly insane".

While playing the Turks, I executed every single prisoner I took, without exception. Now, for the past 100 turns or so, my faction leaders and heirs have all had either 'the Mad' or 'the Malevolent' for their titles. Like, every single one of them - every Sultan, and every prince. Once and a while I'll get a 'the Merciless.'

Basically, that's all I do - I just execute everyone. For some reason, though, even with a bunch of dread traits and a 'the Mad' title, a general can still have six chivalry or more. It's wierd, and seems completely random.

About the execution thing:
I always execute every prisoner I have, but it never gave any mad traits or stuff like that, only "the Merciless" sometimes, but even that's rare.

Okay, I've gotten 'the Merciless' now, and I saw some nice traits slowly popping up and increasing. I'll have to wait it out and see how it will develop further.

Well, malaria was an effective cure for syphillis. It just had the minor side effect of possible death. But hey... that beats eventual death by syphillis right?

But I still maintain that madness in the game is random. I don't think repeated assassination attempts will cause madness, though it will cause a number of other negative personality traits such paranoia.

LOL at the malaria comment. Sounds like the best cure I've heard of in a LONG time!

In other news, I'm setting the record straight in game terms. "Insane" and "deranged" are the 2 mad-like traits that are in the traits file. Insane goes Dysfunctional/Quite Mad/Utterly Insane while Deranged is Skewed View/Deranged/Dangerously Mad. Triggers that mention them:

The first 2 show 2% chance upon coming of age, the third triggers on an assassination attempt if you have 3 or more paranoia points. Interestingly enough, you get a point of paranoia 1/3 of the time from any given assassination attempt. Paranoia, Insane, and Deranged are all self perpetuating, meaning once you get the guy "Slow To Trust" or "Overly Suspicious" (first 2 paranoid levels) you can let him stew to level it up until you throw him back to the wolves again once he hopefully has 3 points in it and thus chances to become insane and/or deranged upon the next attempt. He will be "Paranoid" when having 4 points Paranoia, so that would be a clear indicator. A general can also inherit paranoia from his father, or gain it when a brother is adopted, though sending him out to assassins is undoubtedly the easiest way to get the necessary paranoia if you're not going to count on just lucking out getting a random birth spawning of the trait(s).

My Current Faction leader has every Superstition trait there is (i think)

Quite Mad, Deranged, Overly Suspicious Paranoid, Trusts no one, keeps to self.

So you're saying getting assassination attempts on him will make him get the necessary paranoia, but very often my characters don't get threatened by enemy assassins. Having 'em stand around doesn't do much either, or do you really mean to just send them near enemy assassins at least?

No idea, Milan spams assassins in quite a few games, only once for me though, 4 assassins outside Florence attempting Faction Leader every turn

4 attempts on your life in 2 years has to be scary.
