M2TW Very Hard difficulty battles

I have come to ask the advice of the EB community, because there are so many contradictory opinions on the total war forums and I want a solid answer.

So, what does change when battles in M2TW are VH difficulty? The Devs said that it just makes battles more realistic, and doesn't give the enemy stat bonuses except moral. Is this true? Do they get actually get stat bonuses?

Oh and another question:

What is the best M2TW mod to use that overhauls M2TW making it altogether more fun and fixed? Rise of Kings? Winning Combo? Age of War?

where do you find these mods? I had high hopes for Medi 2 but vanilla is just so lame! Plus I've been spoiled by EB's excellent and huge map, so I'm feeling a bit claustrophobic.
