Thread: Computer building ships while blockaded?

Default Computer building ships while blockaded?

Is this correct? I thought in prior games, if a port was blockaded, ships could not be built. It makes it about impossible to maintain naval superiority because even if you wipe the enemy fleet out, they just build more until they break out. Is this right? Anyone else seeing this?

Yes, ships are still buildable while blocaded. which makes sense, really; blocading makes your fleet *block* the port, not *occupy* it.

I don't quite recall if past games let you build ships in blockaded ports, but in this one that isn't something that's restricted to just the computer. I'm currently at odds with Poland right now (as Russia, and I'm beating them into the ground), and at the beginning of the war I forgot to protect my ports on the Black Sea. After the were blockaded, I just made some ships and beat the Poles back. I'm only playing on M/M though (I feel bad about that, seems like everyone else around here is playing on VH/VH), so it may be different on higher settings.

Anyway, in terms of realism, I see nothing wrong with it. You build ships on land, so a blockade shouldn't have any real effect on shipbuilding unless sea trade is your only source of timber.

Well, but being blockaded is like being under siege - I don't think you can build army units while under siege. In addition, alot of the materials to build ships likely had to be imported.

I guess another point I'm making is that I didn't think you could do this in RTW. Am I just forgetting?

It's been a while since I played RTW, but I seem to recall building ships in ports that were under siege. Makes since too, since ships back then were built somewhat away from the water and then launched, and blockading ships are generally not that close to shore, but instead are sinking anything that wanders into their blockade line.

edit: However if the port is being blockaded by a land unit sitting on the land part of the port area, that would seem to be incorrect.

Ill end this argument. Yes you can, and you are meant to be able to. And you could in RTW as well.

It's no argument, just a question :) And thanks for clarifying for my poor memory.

What really ticks me off is that the AI can build ships while blockaded, move them out and sail away, attack you or go about their business. Hey! I´m blockading here!!!! Only realistic thing would be to remove the ability to build ships at all during a blockade like when you lay siege to a settlement.

It would be nice if ships couldn't leave a harbor without fighting the blockading fleet. It was an old Royal Navy strategy to blockade ports to prevent the various enemy squadrons from meeting up.

Sometimes when ports are close by on the map I get this hilarious situation where I blockade an enemy port, only to see the fleet inside sail out and blockade my own port next turn.

Blockaded ports should be able to build ships, but only be able to move them to attack the blockading fleet. If blockaded ports couldn't build anything, i think it would be open to a lot of abuse by the human player-you could blockade all their ports with just one ship each, provided you have their regular navy taken care of, and it would be nigh on impossible for the AI to lift the blockades.

Yeah, they should at least have to defeat the blockading fleet before being able to leave port. That infuriates me also.

which is stupid too... you should at least be able top build militia... because that's why they are for...

you can still hire merc while your fort is under siege... which is actually impossible... so that's sumthing that should be switched for being able to built militia in a besieged town...

you can still build ships while blockaded which is normal for reason stated above... what is stupid is that you can leave (i thought) and the AI does so frequently (atleast in RTW and M2TW isnt that much different)
