now i'm here, and history is vindicated.
Not 'til you get your first paycheck, looking for $7.75 per hour x the hours you worked, only to find you're taking home about $6.50 per hour worked, after taxes.Originally Posted by Strike For The South

Congrats, and welcome to the world
p.s. Kind of a funny name for a grocery store "H.E. Butt Grocery Company", until you realize it's a guy's name. So; can we nick-name you "cartman" now, since you'll be chasing down carts in the parking lot? #2 son did that work for 2 years, and we teased him all the time. I myself worked evenings and weekends at a Mom-and-Pop grocery store through high school.

Good, just remember that your studies are an investment and will pay off far more in the long term.
So make once you cover your monetary needs, do all your study before doing extra work time to cover short term wants... investments/study funds are a different matter.

You have to pay taxes strike, just not federal income tax. You will lose about a third of your paycheck, I believe.Originally Posted by Strike For The South

Typical Texas income witholdings: here It usually amounts to 15-20% of gross wages. Our Striker is a young, single lad, w/0 dependents, so his weekly witholdings will be kinda high (probably near 20%), BUT he'll likely get most of his Fed Income Tax paid refunded, due to his low annual income.

20%!!? thats really low, i think i loose somewhere between 43% and 48% of my gross income per year depending on how mush i work (contractor)... but look on the bright side i guess, i get to pay for goverenment funded roads twice... once with taxes and then everytime i use it...![]()
best advice i can give you is set up 2 bank accounts and split your pay, that way you can live of one and save the other, even if you only split the money 80/20 but aim for 65/35 if you can. it will give you a great start in the life race.
35% of $7.5 = 2.625
2.625 x 20hrs a week= $52.50
52.50 x 52 weeks = $2730 a year saved.

Payroll taxes are a given. State Income taxes, Federal Income Taxes, Social Security Tax, Medicaid Tax, probably in the neighborhood of the 30% Kukri mentioned. When you file a tax return next year, at your probable income level, you'll get most of it back. Death and taxes, get used to it.
I would kindly suggest that you get into the habit of paying yourself first. Even if you only start out saving $20 a week, it will add up over time and you'll not even miss it after awhile. We all tend to adjust our lifestyle and spending habits to what we take home each payday, learning to save and invest a portion of your wages is an important life skill. You could use it for college or trade school, to buy a car or whatever. Don't put it off, compounding interest over time at your young age can really add up.
"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." *Jim Elliot*
Fine advice, from guys who obviously know. The 'magic' of compound interest takes awhile to bear fruit, but starting a tiny savings vehicle at 16... by age 25, you'll be sitting nicely.

Ah the sheer joy of Sydney's motorways, while Perth with a lesser per capita population has no toll ways. Normally roads are more cost efficient to build up in built up areas... not many country towns have all sealed roads... except in Sydney were motorways are common as ex-politicians joining the companies that create the same motorways... What annoys me about taxes is that a billionaire who cashes in his company he owns for billions will pay either 10% or 0% tax (depending on whether he goes off shore or not), whereas the average person pays a far far higher percentage.
On the topic of part time jobs, how does $40 an hour sound?

What really gets my goat is that we (NSW's humble folk) have to subsidise for the rest of those ungrateful GAHs, while our roads remain the worst in the nation, etc (can't be bothered to go into further detail...); even though we contribute most of the revenue, economy, workforce and we have the largest population.Originally Posted by Papewaio

Instead, learn the fine art of always living well above your means. This way, you'll project success at all times, which means that over time you'll get better jobs and chicks - for nothing attracts success like success itself. Forget compound interest - nothing beats the mechanism of compound success.![]()
Funky jobs don't go to boy-scouts who spend their college years as a reclusive nerd in their dorm; they go to people who blasted away their student allowance to go trekking in the Himalayas.
