    Default Backroom Love-in

As I near 2,000 posts at the org (many of them here) I wanted to let everyone know of the positives I’ve discovered in such a negatively charged environment. That and I thought: What the hell, why should the Frontroom get all the love? There are several people that have had a profound, positive impact on me. There are many more than I am listing but these are the ones that stick out at the moment.

Personally I think I’ve been a real ass at times and should have received A LOT more warnings than I have. I’ll just take the silly ones and double them to make myself feel better. Working here (not at the .org) can be frustrating, and dull, and I appreciate the outlet for my rage. Who is it that has the saying in their sig: Therapy helps but screaming obscenities is cheaper. True dat!

    On with the list:

Louis the Fat: I don’t think a single person has so dramatically changed my view of a certain people (race, subspecies, etc) than he has changed my view of the French. Sure I’ve always had sneaking suspicions about the difference between Parisians and, well, the rest of the country. However the loud, obnoxious minority always makes the news and can affect our opinion of the whole. His reasonable and incredibly articulate posts have made me realize just how much in common our two people have.

BG: Everyone knows who I’m talking about. However since he’s gone green it isn’t wise to say his entire name (speak of the and he will come). There’s so much good stuff that I can say about this man that I can’t fit it into a single post. I disagree with him on many of his more serious views but he’s just so damn charming that I let it go. I’m also hesitant to say too much good because he may be the Dr. Jekyll to Tribesman’s Mr. Hyde. It’s hard to find another explanation for the difference between the two. NEVER quibble over details with with an educated Irishman.

Dariush: It’s said that Farsi is such an intricate language (I say convoluted) that those who grow up speaking it and learn English, carry that fine way of speaking over to their new language. If what I know about him is true, then that makes me a believer. He’s come up with some incredibly witty remarks to some of the more extreme anti-muslim/arab comments and they’re a pleasure to read.

LEN: Our resident Turk. I know we have other members from that country but when I think of the good things about that country, I include him. We both greatly admire the Father of the Turks (maybe not in all ways similar) and I’m sure he sits comfortably in a saddle while he rides thru the sandstorm.

DivE: I just combined his two names. Friendly and outspoken member of the Backroom. Those regulars that don’t know about the good things he’s done here don’t deserve to be reminded. We should all know by now. Unfortunately, however, I think he fell asleep during OPSEC classes or took the word “simplify” too seriously.
Ok, side story: When I went thru MP training we went to the same place the Marines had their training. Out of, I don’t know, HUNDREDS of slides we had to endure without falling asleep I think the Marines had five!!! The instructor said that when he teaches Marines MP stuff, the key word is simplify. No kidding. But they always had the hottest women.
Great guy, I just wish he wouldn’t post so much about himself as people in our (former) occupations aren’t too popular.

What else? There are many I didn’t include but I wanted to open up the floor to everyone else.

Oh yes, and there’s the Dutch ( ). God bless you all and I don’t know how you gave the Spanish so much hell but well done! Oh, and you have Amsterdam. I’ll include Belgians in this one as I may double their GNP by consuming all their fine…consumables.

Oh and on a COMPLETELY unrelated note. Um, I think I’m moving to Germany to work for a few years and may need a few friends. Just to show you that all is forgotten when it hits page 2, I’ll buy the drinks. PM if you want to take pity on a poor American and help him not stick his Texas sized foot in his mouth.

I suppose I should mention DevDave but he hasn’t posted in a while and I’m still not sure what to think of SFTS. Honorable mention: the Lemur, Don, Zorba et al.

    Lovely post.

Most of whom you mention have made a profound, positive impact on me too. And there are many others too that have remained unmentioned.

    Thanks for your praise!

I should like to accept your compliment on the condition that you extent the courtesy to all French orgahs. In the backroom Brenus and Meneldil spring to mind. Others have dropped in here occasionally as well. Many are active in the more game-related subforums. Sadly Brenus doesn't post a lot here anymore and Meneldil has reduced himself to lurking. But I would hope that also the intelligence and factualness of our Croydoner and the wit of our Toulousain have made you realise that France, for all the 'exception' she likes to radiate, is for better and for worse just another country, with some good and some bad aspects.
As a people, the French like all other peoples are not a monolith. There are some that you like and some that you really don't.

The tiny print: Dariush is Iranian, they speak Persian, not Arabic. But it is an intricate and cultured language nonetheless.

    Farsi.
There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

Farsi is Persian for Persian. Nowadays it's usually called Farsi, or Persian-Farsi.

Well all love you, Vuk. There just that much love going around.

As anyone can see based on my habits, I am very fond of the Backroom. And there's only one reason for that—the people. Nowhere else can I discuss the death habits of lemmings in a civilized way with people from all over the world. I want to list the peeps who have made this experience so rewarding, but I fear anything I type will be woefully short. Frankly, if you're posting in the Backroom, I love you. But hey, I'll give a shout out to Strike, who makes me laugh, as does Louis IV and DevDave; a high-five to the Conservative Club: Redleg, Xiahou, Crazed Rabbit, Gawain (we all miss him, don't we?) and Don Corleone (who's probably got me on ignore by now—let me back into your life, Don!); a frosty mug-toast to the excellent mods, including BG, a guy who made me laugh many, many times (I hear he also makes wise, thoughtful posts, but those go right over my head—on with the abused genital threads!); Navaros for being the resident creationist, which I adore; PanzerJager for being the resident fascist, which is both wonderful and scary; spmelta for making me laugh more than once; likewise, Spino for giving me several gut-wrenching laughs ... see? This is the problem.

I appreciate too many people here to do any justice with a list. If I wasn't having fun, I wouldn't be posting here. 'Nuff said.

    [edit]

Oh, BTW, Persian = Farsi. Same thing.

Vuk, now you're starting to remind me of some particularly irritating girls I've dated. "You love me?"

    "Yeah, baby, I love you."

    "Really?"

    "Really."

"You're not just saying that, are you?"

"No, baby, I love you lots."

"You really mean it? You wouldn't just say that?"

And so on and so forth. There's probably a male version of it, but I haven't been privy to it. Anyway, stop fishing!

There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

Let's not ruin a positive thread by spamming, gentlemen.

Vladimir, I am both touched and honoured by your kind words.

As has been established, Tribesman and I appear to be scions of the same loins, but he was snatched away to a life of hardship and trial, whereas I was blessed by a life of silver spoons and spoiling. I had tried to lock him away in an Iron Mask, but the Four Moderators rescued him and he is now bent on revenge against the cruel conspiracy that abandoned him in the org's Chateau d'If (aka Sealand).

Either that or I have been reading too much Dumas.

If I had to write a valedictory to all those who have positively influenced me here, I should have another novel on my hands. Thanks to everyone - you are all remarkable!

I've made you laugh Lemur? I hope there were at my jokes and not my arguments.

Four stage strategy from Yes, Minister:
Stage one we say nothing is going to happen.
Stage two, we say something may be about to happen, but we should do nothing about it.
Stage three, we say that maybe we should do something about it, but there's nothing we can do.
Stage four, we say maybe there was something we could have done, but it's too late now.

Man am I having connection problems. A big shout-out to Charter Cable! I wrote a long reply to this, and now it's lost forever. Short version:

I would never single someone out at a love-in for derisive laughter; that would be in poor taste. So when I say "X makes me laugh," I'm referring to their humor, not to their serious arguments.
