Thread: Recomended mods for Morrowind
Mount Suribachi 12:34 01-09-2007
I've been getting back into Morrowind recently, picked up my old character - level 18 Imperial Knight - with whom I have barely scratched the surface of the main plot.

Anyway, I was wondering what mods you guys would recommend. Cos the problem is there are so many!!! Quite literally bazillions of them.

I'm not looking for a complete makeover, just ones that will enhance my gameplay experience. The 2 things that I know for starters I'm looking for are

1) Improved graphics. Morrowind was a real system hog when it came out, but my current system can easily handle it at high resolution and maximum view distance. I especially would like to see improved humanoids, and especially those horrid heads!!

2) Better dialogue/NPCs. Always a weak point of the game for me compared to the likes of BG2, PST, KOTOR.

Any other suggestions for enhanced gameplay gratefully received.

There is this program called something like Morrowind FPS optimizer, or something to that extend. It let's you view farther than you normally can.

Search for the "Better Bodies" mod. I never ran it myself (had stopped playing morrowind by the time i came across it), but if the screenies are to be believed, the character/npc models get a substantial upgrade.

Here's a before/after mod pic:

*Be advised, however, that there is an "adult" version of the mod out there too, so unless that's your thing- DL the right one.

I can definitely recommend the Better Bodies mod. It makes a huge difference.

Aside from that, I'd say experiment with the mods on this site. It's the one I used to find the stuff I was looking for; right now I've got the Darker Morrowind texture set (looks great!), readable signposts, more wildlife, and a nice looking sky mod.

I still have the following mods on my computer, but probably used more:

Ammo Fix - bugfix
BetterBodies2.1 - improves character models
BetterHeads1.1 - improves character heads
BetterBooksV1 - improved higher res books
Blood and Gore - Extra splatter
FashionableMerchants - bugfix
FloraGLow - improved glow-in-the-dark plants
Healersv1 - adds some healers to towns
Visual Pack 2.2 - Better terrain visuals, you'll want this one.
Max's Glow - removes the glow on magic weapons
Month Bugfix - bugfix
MoonsSoulGems - improved Soul Gem textures
MorrowindComesAlive - think this one added more NPCs, children etc
Morrowind Sound Enhanced v1.5 - recommended soundpack
NPC Schedules - shops shut etc, like in Oblivion.
PassiveHealthyWildlife - Less likely to be attacked by suicidal critters
Unofficial Morrowind Patch - All sorts of fixes/optimisations
Red Skies - Very atmospheric ash storm red skies, recommended
Reflective Gold - so shiny
Sharpened Models Weapons - so shiny
Slofs Better Beasts - improved critters
Weathered Signs - improved roadsigns
Windows Glow - window glow at night
WildernessSounds - more great sounds

Now some conflict may with others , so get the load order right for the full effects. No, I can't remember what load order I used.

Most were from Planet Elder Scroll I think.

The most helpful link I can give you, a superb list of mods:

Edit:

I see Geoffrey had the same idea!

the mythicmods list is by far the best list of mods out there, even if it's not really that active anymore.

That is, they used to have an awesome mod-finder back when the Morrowind Summit was still in its old site which I consider the best Morrowind mod-finder in the whole internet. Nowadays they have a crappy ordinary searcher that to me is downright useless. Go to hell, gamespot.

The *must* for the mods (others are essentially personal preference) that I'd suggest are:

- Unofficial Morrowind Patch. Self-explanatory and absolutely mandatory.

- Better Bodies. They are really, really much better. And a lot of clothing/armor mods out there rely on the Better Bodies' model. The nude version isn't actually that distracting. You just get used to it after a while. Besides, it gives realism to Desele's House of Earthly Delights :P

- An environment/critter tinkering mod. You can either take one or two quick fixes or big ecological overhaul. But you do need one if you don't want to walk around being hit on by every bloody CLIFF RACER (shivers) out there despite your shiny ebony armor -- which I rather think you probably remembered from your old playing. I remembered a "hunt cliff racers to extinction" little mod but I never tried it myself. What I used was called "less aggressive critters."

I hated Giants myself though. Gigantic mod, true, but way, way too cluttered. And defeats the purpose of what I'm looking for in such a mod. I want less critters trying to commit suicide while I'm on a quest, not more!

- An alternative start mod. The game is far more enjoyable for those new characters if you don't have to go through the tutorial process again.

- One suggestion, get yourself a paper fix mod. A little mod that will disable you reading empty papers every time you try to pick one up.

The fancy stuff I'll say that most people will have to try out themselves.

Thanks guys. Whats the deal with load order?

Some mods conflict (they change the same thing, be it NPC, cell (place), or anything else, or use the same id for things they add). You just have to be careful to let the one you want to appear in the game to load last.

Those don't really count for .esm, though. The master files are just automatically overwritten, which is a good thing.

try

House d'Orthay (teleportation at home)
Arrow seller in Vivec (really useful, infinite glass arrows !)
LeFem armor set (must have for female characters)
there was a house outiside Vivec too, it was great but I don't remember the complete name.
anyway, that house is great; lots of containers, dummy to put yours armors on, there is even an archery range !

all four are plugins and they really come in handy

there was also a plugin to get the Adventurer's Set of clothes, really great
water walking shoes, levitation trousers, water breathing jacket, fatigue robe, night eyes belt and so on...

none of these items were powerful relics, they were just here to make your life easier

a river ?
bah, keep running
a mountain ?
I couldn't care less...

Those graph / item / minor glitch improving mods are all ok... but what's with any mods that add new quests / dialog options / enrich the main story line etc.?

I have a few RPG's in mind myself and Morrowind is one of them, the other - Wizardry 8. Has anybody here played that one, what are the opinions and are there any major mods around that you know of?

I hated Wizardry 8, and I so wanted to like it. It's bizarre that it was made by the same folk as made the glorious, god-like Jagged Alliance II.

Primarily, I hated (spoilers so people don't have to read my rants):

(1) The absence of noticeable story, characters or dialogue.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
It's old skool - kill 100 bad guys, go up a level, repeat. I thought - hoped - Bioware/Black Isle killed that sub-genre off? The tipping point for me was when you meet a hologram of the big baddy in a swamp and he monologues around, looking and sounding for all the world like a villain from Power Rangers.

(2) The combat - SOOO slow and almost impossibly hard.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
In fact the whole game was so slow. I used to like turn-based games. TWs glorious real time battles started to turn me around. Wizardry 8's agonisingly slow turn based combat also helped change me. Plus I found the blood splats as your guys were whacked seemed kind of masochistic. And the killer was, I found the combat too hard. It was humiliating - I min-maxxed my party religiously, levelled up to carefully exploit the awful character development system, fought as tactically as I could. And I still died easily to some dumb plants who shouted "wheee!". Maybe I am useless, but I rather fear you are expected to tiptoe around fighting re-spawning monsters and levelling up, before you can make significant progress on the main quest.

(3) The character development system

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I can cope with a fairie ninja with a liquorice stick of doom, naff elephantmen, catmen, dogmen, whatever races. Well, almost. But what I really hated was having to cycle my character through classes just to get the decent stat bonuses. Today, it's Tuesday, so I am a Samurai. Tomorrow, I'll be a crusader. Great roleplaying.

Sorry to rant. And to rant off-topic at that.

LoL Econ21... as a loong time Arulco tourist myself - that was just about all I needed to know about W8... and as Raven would put it:"Problem...solved!"

Here's a little something for ya in return:

... shows how many of the A.I. in the 1.13 mod have become opium eaters. :)

And to get back to the topic... what's with story, quest and / or dialogue enhancing mods for Morrowind - are there any?

Better bodies of course. It comes with an installer, so you select the vershion you want. Good mod imroves the bodies both male and female amazingly.

Also I'd suggest The Illuminated Order mod. Possibly one of the greatest mods for Morrowind. Long story to it and in the end you may just become a lich.

Thanks for all the replies so far guys. I've installed the better bodies and better heads mods, and the latter in particular is amazing. I've been so used to those horrid head models, I still am shocked every time I see that photo-realistic hair!

My plan is to try and install 1 new mod each time I play. Tonight will be........Clothiers of Vvardenfel 1.1

Have you tried the Less Generic NPCs series?

It sadly was not completed, but from what they've done so far it's pretty amazing. They added a lot of character to the characters in the cities ( ) that they finished and a few simple quests befitting the mod's non-intrusive, seamless integration into vanilla Morrowind.

This is not, however, a big, story/quest mod. It's there to make vanilla Morrowind cooler.

Not really a mod, but if you have the time and patience to learn how to use it the Morrowind Graphics Extender can be used to achieve a lot of flashy effects that cant be done with the original Morrowind, That is, if you have a good graphics card. With that, you can also add "Distant land" to morrowind, which, like oblivion allows you to see far into the distance, even if it is a bit dodgy.
