    With the sea trade, i'd assume that it prioritises nearby provinces, so you'd only really see distance trade if you set out to do so by only having trade rights with england as egypt, for example.

    As a side note, it will also help you if you plan to drop a economic warrior, er merchant, into said faction's territory. Your individual merchants will make more money trading goods out of regions that you have trade agreements with. Sometimes significantly more as in 100+ florins per turn if it's a pricey good and your capital is distant from the region.
