what effect does water_surface?

I was just wondering what effect Water_Surface has. Does it play a large part in the campaign or anything?

I have a map, which is a smaller part of mundus magnus, and I was wondering if I could just leave it as is. Any thoughts?

I assume you mean the tga in the campaign folder. It doesn't effect anything to do with the game play. If you make a backup copy and paint it funny colours you'll see it alters one element of the colouring of your sea areas. I'm not entirely sure how it rescales or tiles itself to larger maps, but don't worry if you are happy with the appearance of your sea there is no need to change it.
