Ive been in Australia since 1988, things are expensive here. Its amazing the lack of common sense and judgement that exists here.

Lets look at some things here:

    - Labour is very expensive, why? Because a lot of people are fiscally irresponsible in Australia, they acquire items that are beyond their means, when that happens, they pass the costs to the custoomers. Yes, I'm talking about brickies, tilers, sparkies, and other trades not normally associated with high-income brackets

    - We won't let in foreign labour to relieve our labour shortage. A lot of overpaid and shoddy tradesmen want to keep this going so they can squeeze every last penny thy are not entitled too.

    - My city, Perth, has the highest median average cost of a house in the nation, that is ridiculous considering it beating Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne which are 4 times as huge!!

    - The economy is booming because of raw materials exports, that is only half the story, the economy is also proppoed by consumer consumption fueled by debt....ironic pun....debt-fueled economy.

    - Dollar/Value is quite poor compared to America and Canada. Its because of labour expenses...expensive, thats why we get British tradesmen coming here, they're like Kings here!! I know, I've met em.

    - Lack of direction, the government seems to be coasting along rather than develop a long term vision like Singapore, China, Malaysia and other up and coming countries.

    - Innovation poorness, most of the best ideas from Auztralia go overseas because well, the environment for innovation is kinda stifled here. Best go overseas to develop ur great ideas.

    - 1 million Australian are overseas expats, thats 1/20th of the population, a lot of them are professionals, experts and smart too. Thats a huge blow to the economy.

    - Listed quite well on the corruption index Plenty of my dad's workmates say that Asia is corrupted and Australia is not...the difference is that Asians know it and use it, here they live in lala-land.

    - Germaine Greer....one of her sayings "old women have the right to be stimulated by young men" (paraphrased).......sick grumpy old sack.

With that said it has some positives:

    - Friendly people, yes they are friendly. I want to bash with copper pipes sometimes but yes, very nice ppl.

    - Australian rules football

    - Australian rules football...love it

    - um, we can buy guitars here...got to be a big thumbs up

    - actually one of the cleanest developed countries in the world

    - CHildren overboard, so funny!!

Growing up here for 19yrs, I've realised I've got to get out of this country!!!

As soon as I get some professional experience in my field, I'm outta here.

Eh, I don't think best rugby team, I don't like rugby but I know the All Blacks are better than the Aussie team.

I do like the theme parks at the Gold Coast though.

Yeah but you look how we played in the world cup.

Brazil was hard pressed to get passed our defence, and when they did that E guy took it the entire field about 35 times every half!

We could (not should, could) have won against Italy, and Italy had it pretty easy from there on.

I'll make it clear, im not Biased to australia in any sport except cricket, which i dont like. I cheer for Brazil soccer, Scotland Rugby. Mainly because the alternatives have New South Welshman!

Runs around in circles saying "We won Origin! We won Origin!"

(i dont cheer for the broncos either, Penny Panthers!

Well even if we dont have the biggest pies of biggest rock, we have the best tourism slogan

"So where the bloody hell are you?"

Or in the Queens case "Why the bloody hell are you here?" (Chasers)

Geez and I thought I had a downer on the place

Like any place Australia has more than its share of ignorant Yobos - the problem is this is encouraged by the government as being part of our national identity - that and sport being our national religion - which only becomes a problem when it is to the detriment of other worthy pursuits like knowledge, innovation/invention and the arts. Basically this country has been way to proud of being a nation of sports addicted, overweight , ignoramuses. That being said - theres lots of space, good climate, clean environment, few fanatical political/religious freaks, and if you can manage to ignore the 98% of people who are so stupid its a miracle they can breathe and talk at the same time - not a bad place to live.

Of coarse when you compare it to the wonderful social freedom [sacasm], and classed hierarchical society of Malaysia (hello Mahatia?) and Singapore (beaten for chewing gum) erm well I think most of your critisism are BS. Yes perths expensive - I wonder why that might be - could it be demand from all the Asian people wanting to live somewhere better??

Its amusing that we have how many? Malaysian and Singaporian students sent here to be educated - I wonder why ?

I know people get touchy when their nations come under the spotlight. So before this goes any further lets:

    A) Keep it civil
    B) Maybe move this to the Backroom

Its nice to see someone who appreciates the country that provided them a first class tertiary education, and feels indebted and grateful.

Now you've had a wonderful time getting an education here, please feel free to slag the place at every opportunity and use this first class education to benefit the country where said education cant exist due to lack of social freedom - and please dont let the door hit you in the ass on the way out and thankyoucomeagain

A statement that is left open to flaming yes, but you can't deny the fact that Bob Carr was and most of the Queensland government is corrupt. However, on a Federal scale, no not corrupt for a developed country.

    Critical analysis!!!! your joking right

I didnt see a single fact quoted, a single link, it is blatant over-generalised, unsubstantiated, lies.

please clarify a half truth for me - a half lie

and Malaysia, Singapore, China - more vision for the future than Australia

    Sorry - No

I would suggest the poster spend 19yrs in any of the countries they mention

Sorry Rythmic but I am offended, between this and the 'Australia Sucks' thread Im really getting annoyed

why do I have to come into these threads and stand up for my country

is the rule - no country bashing or inflamatory titles - except if its Australia - in which case go for it

this is the frontroom the posters post was out of order, in the spirit of this room but also the thread and besides which, could be descibed as blatantly wrong if not naive at best - and had this been in the backroom and they had made the same comments regarding the USA or UK they wouldve rightly been flamed into cynder. I mean look at it as a whole - "yeh Ive lived here for 19yrs - this place is ******* full of corrupt, uninnovative, losers (if youve got a brain, dont go there) - Im outa here as soon as Ive milked the last drop."

    mm nice

you may feel those comments are a fair reflection of this country - I disagree

and if their comments are allowed to stand - then so should the flame they recieve as a reply

(No partial swearwords, only the stars please - Beirut)

When your a dictatorship its very easy to have more vision/plan than those messy democracies who have to pass laws via the senate and the house of reps and those silly people are always getting in the way of the plan with their silly elections - Mugabe has a vision for Zimbabwe too.

Just so its clear, the purpose of this thread was to joke a little bit of australian humour, and find out (apart from who has it in their location[never seen half of you before!]) who lives in australia.

If you want to argue about Australia further, please, mods, move this to the backroom.

Yes Queensland is a bit corrupt, the federal government is better, but we dont have a great choice here. The Queensland Liberal Party can not do anything, theyve spent nearly 10 yrs(unsure) trying to get the coaltion working. So we are forced to vote for ALP.

Likewise in Federal. ALP for Federal cannot do anything right, so we are forced to vote Howard back.

To quote (yet again) The Chasers
And we also thank John Howard, in this week of his tenth year in power, for keeping this man out of officeFull screen picture of Peter Costello
I am a Queenslander, I however, do see that change is needed, but growing up in QLD, I have also the slight fear of change, or for lack of better words no reason to embrace it. I understand why other states think queenslanders are rednecks, the fact is, most of us are.

Toowoomba recyling water poll. Yes or No. Better to have named it

(yes)Drink water thats perfectly safe, but new in the world (machinery made etc) and you have an inbuilt distrust of, or
(no) Continue drinking pure water and die.

That is the fact, Australia will get less rain, and unless we recyle water, and desalination plants are put up (more than one on the gold coast) we will not be able to support ourselves. And then we might have to move to NT.

No one wants to do that

    No.

If a thread is begun in a way that suits the forum it is in, then the members have the responsibility to keep it civil and on topic. If it gets out of hand, it gets closed. The Backroom is not the garbage dump for threads that turn bad in the Frontroom.

I once fought off a drop bear. He ripped my arm off, but I gouged out it's eyes.
