Default Special siege breaking powers of the Aztecs

Fought my first battle against the Aztecs this morning. I was sieging their northernmost city (can't remember the name of it) and they sent an army from the south to break the siege. I won the battle easily, but a couple of weird things happened:

    1) The army that was inside the city took no part in the battle, they weren't shown in the pre-battle screen and made no appearance on the battle map. I know this is possible, because I've done it myself with my own armies before; had my garrison sit tight while a relief force fought the battle. But this is the first time I've seen the AI do it.

    2) Even though I won the battle and routed the other army, when I returned to the campaign map, not only was the siege broken, but my besieging army had been moved away from the city, all the way north to the coast where my navy was, as if I had actually lost the battle.

    What gives?

    Why did that happen?

I hope that's not an AI siege relief bug. Another reason for me not to buy the game yet... Anyone else see anything weird happen in the same circumstances?
Fighting isn't about winning, it's about depriving your enemy of all options except to lose.
