I advise the Gold Edition. I got it for £7.99 back in August 2006. Probably about...$14-17 or so? So, you should be able to get it cheap these days.
The patch for Gold is the 2.01 patch, and all you do is delete the old .exe and copy and paste the new one in it's place. Or just copy and paste over the old .exe, don't think you need to do any deleting.
EDIT: Using the currency convertor online, it works out at roughly $15.65.

I believe in a society without rules, laws and regulations. A society where there are only ideas - strict ideas that must be followed to by the letter - and any failure to comply is punishable by death. This would be no dictatorship or police state, no one would be living in terror. It would merely be a 'reassessment of one's preferences,' people living in 'not-so-optimistic security.' So, welcome, those who are 'longing to be blindly obedient and loyal, unbeknownst to them.'
Yes,cegman, I d agree... with Gold you ll have the best of both worlds. Since you already have MTW, it s good as a standalone. VI only comes as an expansion so you ll have the complete package.
The patch to 2.01 works fine.

But I already have MTW without VI why would I need gold?
Point is, Gold is much cheaper than VI stand-alone from what I can gauge from this topic. You might be better off with it. Will save you a heap of money.

Kaidonni hit it on the head.
With crazy prices of VI as a standalone, it would seem to be more cost effective to get the Gold Edition.
