I'm amused by the fact that despite being the only person to have written anything so far, I'm not down as a writer! I volunteered to both write and research.

Be happy to research the 1700s though, I have biographies of Frederick the Great and George III, and works dealing with the colonial wars in north America and military matters in general, including Who's Who in Military History.

Well, the various major 18th century conflicts started in the following years...(major ones highlighted)

1700: Great Northern War (ended 1721, but various further Russo-Swedish wars occur throughout the century)
1701: War of Spanish Succession (Marlborough etc.) (various conflicts continue until about 1727)
1733-38: War of the Polish Succession
    1735-39: Russo-Turkish War
1739-42: Anglo-Spanish War (War of Jenkins' Ear) merging into...
1740-48: War of Austrian Succession (Frederick the Great etc.)
    1745-46: last Jacobite rebellions
1754-63: Seven Years' War (inc. French and Indian Wars, Carnatic War, Third Silesian War)
    1768-1774: Russo-Turkish War (again!)
    1775-1783: American War of Independence
1787-1792: Russo-Turkish War (Austria join in as well this time)
1789-1799: French Revolution, leading to the Napoleonic Wars.

While I realise (and hope) that there's going to be more to this project than wars and battles, political intriguing and war are never going to be too far away, so something based around one or more of these would be sensible.

How come the Great Northern War is not highlighted? The Great Northern War lead to the decline of Sweden as a great power while Russia became a great power instead. This changed the politcial scene in Europe pretty dramatically.

Partly cos I did not know how important it was, thankyou for pointing this out to me, partly cos it occurs very early in our chosen period, and partly cos I think not too many people will have heard of it (while understanding that this latter point does not make it a less significant event). I think by 'major' I meant; having a very wide impact, including possibly outside of Europe, although in retrospect I think that the Russo-Swedish War could certainly be argued to be eligible by this vaguely expressed criteria. It's now highlighted anyway!

Guys: please do add your 'personal favourite 18th century war' if it's not been highlighted or mentioned, this is not meant to be definitive or an 'official writing group policy' list or anything, I'm just posting a brief and scantily researched list of conflicts that we might like to include in the story.

I guess we can argue the case for some or all of them, and the ones I haven't mentioned, at this stage, I have no personal preferences. Innocentius has just proved I don't know anything about Scandinavian history anyway!

My plot will be about somebody (who still have no biography) in the court of Maria Teresia (born 1713 - died 1780; ruled between 1740-1780). So everything related to this is OK

Ok everyone, I have been wondering, maybe we should move it to a different website? here are my reasons,

1.We can discuss easily without Non-Members of Writing group looking in, even though i will occasioly post about it.

2.We can make the stories and then post them here.

    3.Easier to control.

Plus a few others, what do you guys think?

Has anyone over here ever written a book? I have a slight interest in writing one. I heard that it was good in a way that I could be doing my dream job, and not work on a 9 to 5 time schedule. The down side is that there are a lot of stress involved. The publishers will only sell books that they think will make a large profit. Thus I can't write anything I want to write about. If my first book fails, then it would be hard for me to get another published. I also heard that most writers sell very few of their books. Any tips?
