Like in RTW there are not any anti squalor buildings. in order to counter up the squalor in your cites built wall upgrades instantly when your cites grow up. Built all the happy,Law,Religion buildings to counter up the problem. And finally if everything is done with no result you can always let the city rebel, recapture it and killthem all
You can also give happiness bust by building larger garnison and/or moving a high dread/chivalry general as a governor.
Never underestimate your enemy, even if he is AI controlled.
let the city rebel, recapture it and kill them all i find this the best way its fun and good experience points for your stronger troops as cities in mtw2 have the weaker units

In Med 2 there is squalor cap at 80%.So squalor is not much of a problem when you have a huge city and have population of like 50000. You should attempt to control squalor early by keeping not building too much farms and health buildings but I do recommend building the town hall line because they give massive public order bonus. 25% for last tier and extra for health bonus. Also, remove governors that have bad management traits as they increase squalor and unrest.
Once you hit the huge city threshold, feel free to let your population soar due to the cap. More population means more income from taxes.

So increasing your farms affects squalor?
Indirectly yes, as farms increase population growth, which, in turn, leads to faster increase of squalor. Personally, I don't build high level farms until the squalor cap is reached anyway. But then, I've decreased the basic farm level of most towns (9 in Antioch?!?Originally Posted by Anthammer

Additional farms gives more food, which increases population growth, leading to more inhabitants and more squalor.Originally Posted by Anthammer
Interestingly, in M2TW trade and good governors also increase growth. The trick is to grow as quickly as you can while building stuff that also increases public order, so that squalor and public order increase at the same rate. This gives you large and controllable cities.
If number of inhabitants (=squalor) grow faster than your public order, you get unrest and rebellion.
If the number of inhabitants grow too slowly, your technology and tax income stagnates.
Aim for balance.

Ok, but i play as Venice, and i try getting Venice (the town) up to as high a trade as possible as quickly as possible, and then struggle to afford the stone wall upgrades. I will have to re-assess this strategy.
