edit descr_model_battle so that the units weapon changes? I have noticed when I load a model in gmax, the bone is just a primary weapon, no classification. Can you change what weapon they use via descr_model_battle.

Nope. The game engine doesn't care what kind of weapon they use. They only look for "primary weapon" and "secondary weapon". If your soldier is wielding a sword and the skeleton is that of a spearmen, he'd use it like a spearman. They cannot distinguish types of weapon from the model.

ok, then how do you specify what kind of weapon it is in gmax or 3ds max?

so the weapon looks like a sword say, or is there a specific model for a sword. or, again, would you copy the spear or sword from another model.

You can copy another model's or make your own. Again, the engine doesn't care about the shape or function of the weapon model. You can put a shield on his right hand, or nothing, he'd still swing it like a sword if his skeleton is swordsman. It only cares for the name "primary weapon" and "scondary weapon". If your model only has a "primary weapon" then if you give him a secondary attack in EDU, he'd be wielding nothing, but would still attack.

Weapon "type" is specified in EDU, although it's mostly for sound effects.

Descr_model_battle only defines which animation a model uses on what .cas file. What the .cas looks like doesn´t matter, as Wles already stated.
