I've been meaning to get back into civ 4 (after a break of over a year, I have a short attention span). Do you think Beyond the Sword is worth it, even for the less fanatical Civ4 player ?

Yes, Iraq is peaceful. Go to sleep now. - Adrian II
Yeah BTS is really good. It introduces a lot of new stuff which will keep you going for a long time. The new scenarios, especially Final Frontier, are great as well. I'm not at all a fanatical player, and I love it. Even the new civilizations alone are enough to get me coming back, but thats not to mention all the other amazing features like corporations and espionage, random events and all the cool new units like Mobile Artillery and Paratroopers.Originally Posted by doc_bean

Yes, BTS is a very good and definitely worth buying. The only downside is that some of the new features are not balanced very well, which throws off the pretty decent balance that they had going with Warlords.

I am playing no video games at all. I think that is good.
Emotion, passions, and desires are, thus peace is not.

I'm currently addicted to WH40k: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. It makes me want to dust off my Imperial Guard army and paint new miniatures.
But what POs me the most is that all commanders EXCEPT the Space Marines (haven't checked the Orks) get a wargear upgrade that allows them to detect infiltrated units. This isn't all that bad since he gets the best melee in the game and has a personal teleporter. Still, it's trouble if you run against a Tau or Eldar army.
Xbox360 died so I am fanatically playing Mortal Kombat:Armageddon and Super Strikers Charged.
FUN
Well, I'm still on my PS2, and probably won't get a 'next gen' system, since my vid game interest has waned somewhat. Currently playing the Prince of Persia series(again). Definitely one of my favorite series of all time.
Also, BTS is great, I played it at a friend's place and was very impressed with the limited time I was playing it.

Just started playing Track Mania- yea and I pretty much suck and can finish the token race if Im lucky

Got to Hollister last night. I quickly discovered that his face is invincible to shotgun bullets so, after two or three tries, I gave up for the evening, I'll probably try again later. Any tips?Originally Posted by God's Grace

Well I have played Gun perhaps 1/2 years ago so I forgot some things, but here is a walkthrough (from a Gamespot walkthrough) on how to kill him:Originally Posted by Craterus
As you can probably tell by your clothing, you're reaching the final leg of
your quest. Our good friend Hollister isn't keen on that idea though, and so
you have to deal with him. Equip your Dual Peacemakers before heading into the
next area.
Hollister's location is marked on the compass. Head to him quickly, as he will
throw dynamite when you're not in sight. At close range, he will shoot you with
Ned's rifle, which is VERY powerful. Ideally, you should give him the drop, tap
the Quickdraw button and unload as much lead as you can into Hollister's ugly
face. He should either die or have a slither of health left to finish off. If
you can't Quickdraw his health down, dodge his rifle shots by running around
corners, pop out and give him a few shots from your revolvers, but you're far
better off using Quickdraw.
Once his health is down, Hollister will do a suicide run. Head down to the
ditch he's in and he will run towards you with as much dynamite as he can
carry. You can't kill him, so you have to stop him from killing you. Start
running backwards and unload your revolvers into him non-stop. This will slow
him down until the dynamite blows him up. If you're too slow, the dynamite will
kill you too. Don't use Quickdraw, you're trying to end this as quickly as you
can.

Hmmm. I've tried using Quickdraw but he just seems bulletproof and I tend to get discouraged when that rifle starts to get a few shots in.
Today, I did a lot of the side missions and bought a lot of upgrades so should be easier this time. Thing is, I died on the way back to the mission start point. Saved it just after but do you know what's the effect of dying? It didn't seem to undo my side-mission progress and I had all my guns and ammo. All it did was transport me to the mission start point.
EDIT: Heh, I also tried to get in nice and close and attack him with my melee weapon which is that Tommahawk. Turns out he owns a pretty good sword so that didn't pay off.

Well, I finished Gun. Thanks for the help God's Grace.
Kind of playing Battlefront II again now, but not much 'cos it's gotten too easy.
Congrats m8, and no problem. The bad thing about Gun is that there really is no replayability value.Originally Posted by Craterus

Only borrowed the game, so it didn't cost me anything but it was fun for the week or so that I was playing. Obviously, I won't buy it.
Any PS2 games that people can recommend or is it all about the PS3 now?
I use my PSFree to play my PS2 games in upscaled glory with the benefits of a wireless controller and faster loading. PS3 games? There aren't any, not really. That's why I wouldn't have the console if it hadn't been free.Originally Posted by Craterus

Well, it's nothing serious. My brother has a PS3, I'll just see what other games he buys for that. (He only has Resistance at the moment).
Thanks anyway.
Although, none of my PS2 games work on the PS3. Does it have to be updated at least once before it can play any?
Developers are staying the heck away from the PS3 for several reasons:
1. Low sales of the console due to the price increase and low-quality launch games. It's easier to make a profit producing a game on the 360 because more people own 360s.
2. Bad press. As good as your game may be, nobody wants to fork over 600 dollars for a console nobody likes.
3. More difficult to program for. Having to program on the Blu-Ray format is one of the reasons why programmers do not like the PS3.
Currently, the only top-rated games out of the whole PS3 library are Resistance: Fall of Man and Virtua Fighter 5. Metal Gear Solid 4 may OR may not be a PS3 exclusive. If it is not, then that would signal the death knell of the console.
Back on topic, just grab yourself a cheap flat PS2 and games like Okami, God of War II, and many other great games that are still being produced.
FM 2007, EB, and currently reinstalled M2TWto try again.
How are you doing Craterus?
We do not sow.
I'm almost "between games" at the moment - rather like the unemployed person who is "between jobs". Nothing much in my collection or on the shop shelves grabs me. Bioshock and Kingdoms should put that right soon though.
At the moment, I am playing The Last Days mod for Mount and Blade. It is an astonishing piece of work (although I am a great LOTR fan, so I am biased) and vastly enriches M&B.

Short answer: Yes.Originally Posted by Craterus
Long answer:
In the case of non-PAL consoles (i.e. any brought outside of Europe) PS2 emulation is provided by the Emotion Engine chip present in the console, meaning that it pretty much has a PS2 console built into it. There was a small update released around launch which tweaked a few things with this style of emulation. Without the update most games will work; once that update is in place the emulation should be near flawless with any game.
PAL consoles don't have an Emotion Engine chip in them because Sony wanted to cut manufacturing costs. Emulation is purely software. The version of software included on the console when you buy it is frankly useless. It won't work with most games, and it's buggy as a jam sandwich in an ant hill. Each update to the console firmware has improved emulation, adding new games to the supported list and fixing problems with others. As of the latest update nearly all games should work, most of them without problems or with minor problems only. Happily, updates will break emulation for a game or three, meaning some titles which used to work now don't. Metal Gear Solid 3 is currently broken on the latest firmware; it worked on all previous ones except the version present on a new console.
There's an official website which lists which games work and at what level, but it hasn't been updated to reflect the most current firmware so it's not as helpful as it used to be.
Do note that whatever version of the console and firmware you have, using emulation mode will turn your controller off. You need to hit the PS button as the game begins to load to turn it back on again. Same again if you exit the game and go back to the main PS3 interface. Most irritating.
If you have the console linked to a HDTV and want to make use of enhanced features such as upscaling and smoothing you need to enable these features in the main PS3 settings before starting a game. As of the latest update you can then alter the settings while playing a game to tweak them to whatever suits the game best; just hold down the PS button until the black menu appears, choose settings, then tweak. If you have not turned smoothing and upscaling on in the main menu this option will not be present.
My console has the latest firmware in place, and TBH I've not had any problems with the emulation thus far :touches wood:. Every game I have tried has worked without problems, and has benefited from better visuals, faster loading, and faster ‘memory card’ access (I say ‘memory card’ because it’s actually accessing a simulated card on the consoles hard drive). I've not tried my copy MGS3: Subsistence though ...

Half Life 2
I said I'd never buy it because of Steam, but it was on sale for $19.99 and I heard it supported widescreen monitors, so what the heck. On the plus side, HL2 and Steam installed perfectly. Mind you, I have yet to actually play the game. It got rave reviews across the board so there must be some fun in it somewhere.
I'm terrible at puzzles, so I'll probably load up some cheats, but I'm not really playing it for the challenge, I just want some nice eye-candy and to blow some stuff up.
Unto each good man a good dog
The puzzles are self-explanatory, for the most part - there should be no need to cheat.
Steam's mature these days, and works pretty well, across the board.
I think you'll enjoy it, if you like FPS games at all![]()

I especially like how HL2 is the only game to have a true Closed Captioning system built in. Instead of just subtitles when someone talks, you get subtitles when someone is shooting at you, when an explosion detonates, and everything else. Thumbs up from the deaf community.
