Ultrawar, yeah, I'd heard. It's what made me want to play the game again, in fact.

Well, after finishing both KotoR games, I decided to take on a JRPG- "Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3". I had heard a ton of good press about the game and it sounded original enough to interest me. So far, it's been very linear but I'm still in the "tutorial" phase and I expect things to open up more later. Interesting characters, excellent soundtrack, and tons of anime cutscenes- I like what I've seen so far.

Here's a brief description of the game that doesn't give away too much:
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 is a strange and wonderful trip into an anime adventure. You're an orphaned high school student, transferred to Gekkoukan High School on Port Island. After arriving, he's attacked by creatures known as Shadows. The assault awakens his Persona, Orpheus, from the depths of his subconscious, enabling him to defeat the terrifying foes. He soon discovers that he shares this special ability with other students at his new school. From them, he learns of the Dark Hour, a hidden time that exists between one day and the next, swarming with Shadows. Under the supervision of school chairman Shuji Ikutsuki, he joins his new companions in confronting this threat to humanity. With your school as the primary battlefield, you'll be forced to juggle two lives: Student by day, defender by night. And your greatest challenges await you on the eve of each full moon.

The game gets an M rating, which it probably deserves. I know some people find the way you summon your Persona disturbing..
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
You use your "Evoker", which looks nearly identical to a handgun, point it at your head and pull the trigger. So yeah, you essentially have to blow your brains out to summon your Persona.. except your Evoker doesnt kill you- important distinction there.

Let's not forget the game's tendency to have half-nude women as bosses.

30 hours in and Im still loving Persona3. I'd say it's the best JRPG that I've played in years.

Here, for those who are interested, is the review that first piqued my interest in the game.

Oh, don't say that! It still isn't out here in Europe, and won't be until some unspecified point in 2008.

Did you play any of the other Shin Megami Tensai games? I've got Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga 1+2, and Nocturne. Not sure which is the best starting place.

I once made the mistake of playing the original Persona years ago on my old PS1. I never again made that mistake.

What was so bad about it? The series has only recently been receiving PAL releases; my knowledge begins - and ends - with the 4 PS2 titles I named above.

Played it for the first time the other day and I was shocked to find its much better than I ever expected. So I went out and bought it heh.

Digital Devil Saga looked interesting to me, but I never got around to playing it (or even buying it, thankfully ).

Persona 3 stands on it's own- you don't need to have played any other 'SMT' games to enjoy it (I haven't). Actually, from what I've read, Persona 3 is a "reboot", so there should really be no story arc at all from it's predecessors.

Another plus about the US release is that it includes a hardcover art book and the soundtrack on CD.

It was delayed, but it's worth it. It came out today.

That is one excellent game, I find it extremily hard not having played this type of game before but it simply rocks

If you've just got it, keep practicing. After an hour or two, it'll feel a lot more natural.

My first go (at a friends) was really embarassing. I was just crap, but yeah, you soon pick it up.
