    Default Fire

It was a cold night, colder than it had been the previous nights. A man looked around. The trees surrounding their camp site looked dead. Everything looks dead in the winter, he thought. Behind him a girl was warming herself by the fire.
"What are you looking at ?"
    "Nothing."
She gave him a weird look, but he didn't notice. He was to preoccupied by his own musings. Winter was not really something. It was just the absence of summer. The absence of warmth. The absence of light. The absence of live.

"One of these days you're going to get stuck and you won't be able to get out."
    He looked at the girl.
    "Stuck where ?"
"In your own deep, deep thoughts."
    She smiled at him.
"Perhaps, but perhaps that would be a better place than here."
She gave him the same weird look again. This time he saw it. He had seen it before of course, dozens of times. She always looked at him like that when she thought he was worrying too much. She never seemed to worry. She always seemed so sure. Why was that ?

He went to the fire and warmed his hands. Only then did he feel how cold they had been.
"You're not very talkative today" she remarked.
    "Am I ever ?"
He wasn't. Partly because he thought it made him more mysterious. Mostly because he was so often lost for words. She could talk for hours, about anything and everything. Although he noticed, she hadn't really said much today. Perhaps she had sensed his mood. He sat down and stared into the fire.

The next day he woke up early. He crawled out of their tent and took a deep breathe of the cold morning air. He saw that the sun was coming up. They had survived another night. He looked up at the sky. No snow today, probably. He smiled. Looks like they'd survive another day too. He heard the girl turning in the tent, she was probably awake by now, but she would try and stay in the tent as long as she could. He looked at the ashes of last nights fire. He'd best start a new one. They could have some hot tea and warm up before they left. Best to start the day warm. The cold would catch up with them soon enough.

She turned around again. It was still warm in the tent. Two bodies lying close together tend to be a good heat source. She kept her eyes closed, not wanting to see the sun. She heard some branches snap out side. he was probably making another fire. She smiled. He was a good man. Well, at least he tried to be, tried to take care of her. Not that she needed much taking care of, but she enjoyed his efforts none the less. With a sigh she reached for her clothes.

    "You're up", he said.
    "You've made tea I see"
"Yep. Not much to eat though, we're almost out of food."
    "We'll find something."
    "Like what ?"
"A bear. They hibernate don't they ? Easy prey and lots of meat"
    "A bear ?"
    "A bear."
He stared at her. Was she being serious ? She met his gaze and for a moment they just looked into each others eyes.
"They don't really sleep you know, they just wait until spring. I wouldn't call them easy prey."
"Oh." She saw he didn't really know if she was serious or not. He was pretty confused. Poor man.
"Besides, I don't think any bears live here." He remembered that they hid in a cave to escape a snow storm a few days ago. He hoped there weren't any bears here.
    "We'll find something."
"How can you be so sure ?"
"I am." She really was sure they'd make it, but she couldn't explain him why. He thought he had the world all figured out, she didn't want to burst his bubble. In due time, perhaps, he'd understand. Whether or not that time would ever come she could not tell.

    Have you just been dumped?

I ask because it's usually something like that which causes outbursts like this, needless to say I dissagree completely.

It sounds promising, but I'd like to see more of the story before I comment.

From the very little that I've read here, I would recommend you add more descriptive passages to draw the reader into the scene, and cut down a bit on the explanations of dialogue. For instance, when the girl jokes about hunting bears, it is really not necessary for you to explain that he is not sure if she is joking, and that she knows that he is not sure if she is joking-- all of this could be expressed in a more natural way.

The premise sounds good, what I've seen so far makes me want to read more... so please, continue.
