I think it might have been a shot from one of your catapults at which the game had an error and played to wrong sound file

Actually it wasn't.
I told my Ballista to attack a cavalry unit. The cavalry unit hid, so my ballista kept firing. That means I have a magic ballista.
It may be that the troops that just hit were at some point were visible, but because they were also supposedly hidden in the trees they will appear and then disappear based on the proximity of your units.
I've seen this kind of anomaly several times in forrest battles
Artillery adds dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl.
