    Default More noob questions

    Hi Im a new beginner at Medieval. I see some of you guys mentioning something about sending your units back to "retrain" them, and combining/merging units together. After every battle, I'm bound to have some units that have gained alot of valour points, but there will be only like 4 or 5 men left in that unit, since I dont know anything about "retraining", I end up having to disbanding them. As a result, my army tend to consist of new units who have no valour points and I realize that is a critical factor in battles. Can someone explain more what is "retraining" and how to do it? Thanks

    First you need a unit you want to repair/retrain. For this exercise we will say it is a unit of Spearmen that has been reduced to 1/2 its number from a backstabbing attack by the unhonorable Argonese.

You'll notice the unit disappears from the stack and appears in the training queue with numbers telling you how many men and how much valour, like they do in the battle screen.

    When you click the end year button and go to the next year you'll see the unit has been replenished back up to its full number.

    You can do the same exact thing for units that are injured or full, but are in a provence that has an armor/weapon upgrade (has an armorer or metalsmith in it). When the unit is 'retrained' it will come out with an armor/weapon symbol on its icon noting that the unit has upgraded armor or weapons.

    Once you figure out how to do it you'll know when to do it. It opens up a whole series of strategies for you to think about. Good luck and by the way Welcome to the Org

    Also, click on right hand border of the minimap to expend the options. Uncheck the "tidy up units after battle". This will stop your smaller units getting merged together automatically at the end of the turn.

    Those small units you're reffering with higher than normal valour should be merged together to create a larger higher valour unit. Retraining them will dilute them with "green" men and reduce their valour considerably, and disbanding them is just a waste.

    The reason why your smaller units appear to be gaining valour is because the valour of every individual man is tracked by the game. If you had a green unit of 100 Feudal Men at Arms and after their first battle there were only 20 left at valour 1, then the unit's valour per man may look something like this:

    4 4 3 2 2 2 2 1 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

    This is because their valour, the figure you see on the campaign map, is averaged. If you commited them to battle again and only 5 remained in the unit it may look like this:

    5 4 3 3 1

    Which on the campaign map would be valour 3.

    The units may have gained some valour but the main increase was loosing alot of green troops. If you now retrained that unit in a province that gives no valour bonuses (you would need a Master Swordsmith to give +1 valour to FMAA), the average valour would be back to 0 again. Those men would still exists but they would only start to gain from their valour once the green men have been killed off.

    Correctment, the high valoured men still fight with thier induvidual valour, even if surrounded by 0 valour ones. You simply wouldn't see them on the map. The only thing counted on average is the morale.
    We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

    That's right, I wasn't clear enough in that post. To clarify: The morale of the unit is based on the average valour of all the men in the unit. The individual men still have their individual valour giving them their own attack/defence bonuses. The problem is, and why I said they'd only start to gain from their valour once the greens are killed off, that they will most likely rout due to the lower morale once the unit takes heavy losses, giving those higher valour men not much opportunity to show their mettle, this does also depend on the type of unit itself of course and the general's command stars.
